To improve its bus fleet, SMRT buses will be refurbishing over 730 buses in the next 11 to 12 years. 100 of them are expected to be refurbished by the end of this year.
Mr Lee Seng Kee (vice president, SMRT buses) also mentioned that SMRT will be ordering 132 new buses to replace its ageing fleet. 66 of them will be bought in the second half of next year, while the rest will be bought by 2011. These new buses will be zero-stepped to facilitate the boarding and alighting of the elderly and those who have difficulties getting around. They will also have a space for a wheelchair for the elderly and the disabled in wheelchairs.
On another note, SMRT is planning to provide 11 premium bus routes in the future. "We will also look into extending premium services to serve the evening peak hour," says Mr Lee.
ADD-ON: The rest of the article talks about the development of SMRT's real-time information system, which monitors the positions and timings of the buses through GPS. The article talks a lot about how this system helps the operators know the conditions on the road and thus rearrange bus journeys in case of accidents/breakdowns/traffic jams/bad weather/etc. -
If they plan to keep the fleet size till 2009, I seriously wonder how are they going to meet the 10 mins peak frequency by 2009. Note the new buses are to replace, and not expand.
Unless they are still awaiting the outcome of the public transport review report to be announced end 2007. -

yeah man . finally.
the GDS is already installed on one bus and already 1 year over. i spotted TIB821E on 106 on july 27 2006 with GDS installed
but not working.
bus inside got many news clippings below the GDS screen. all boast SMRt achievements
recently bus got transfer to AMKDEp so is on 859 today.
right now it is unsure if the screen is still in bus. worth a check out.
credits to rachel (TIB744U) who alerted me to installation of GDS screen in july 2006 last yr. then when i asked her what the thing is she already use the 3 letters GDS. but i din know what they meant until yesterday . maadness

don't get too excited... note that SMRT is buying the buses next year, which means u gotta wait till at least 2009 for the new buses to arrive. and anyway this is a fleet renewal to replace the soon-to-be-phased out UDs, not a fleet addition, which indicates that frequencies aren't likely to improve much (unless SMRT deploys all their spare buses away).Originally posted by rx7Savanna:finally SMRTB is doing something to improve on its service..

the new buses are here to replace the nissans in time to come... opinion only... dont mean to offend

They target by half of next year but subject to change.So anything can happen.Runours is that 132 for next year with subsequent 50 per year till 2011.There will be less bendies in future purchase.Most will go to short haul or feeders only.

even buy new buses is to replace not additional.... by the time all the buses come in i tink all the nissans will be gone
