Public misconceptions on buses

Sometimes being a bus fan we couldn't think a lot on how the non bus fans would comment on certain issues on buses. Here are some I ever heard of and some are really out of their minds.
1. UDs are buses from 1970s/80s
- Actually they are bought in 1993 ... ...
2. BC go chiong Volgren Bendy
- In other words they think that all buses are the same in acceleration. Actually buses have different gearboxes and engines and thats why the Volgren bendy can chiong but Box bendy cannot. Last time I used to have such misconception too
3. This one is the most common; SBST = SBS and TIBS = SMRT
- No explanations needed

Oh really! I dun know that UD are bought in 1993. But quite true that SBST fleet is older than SMRT, except for certain models. But after phasing out of the Volvo MkII and MB 0405 (SBST) it will be newer -
maybe u can touch on why some ppl think bus spotting is boring? i mean there're so many things out there with better spot value like birds, planes, watever. but why of all things common, the bus?

simply put the Singapore population is small. the base of bus fan hre is very small
compare it with hong kong or aust.
furtheremore the buses in hong kong loads of variety. so there got many odd things to spot. got scanias got MAn got merc got volvo got neoplan got miji...
ours one not much to spot (my oipinion) [ i want my MAn and irisbus bus lol]
thats why most people will say bus spotting ah boring coz to them he buses here alreadi are indeed boring.

Ok lah. Lets start with my mother as an example. She thinks that a bus is just a box with 4 wheels that can move. Its a vehicle like a car and a van, but buses are the same. Some doesn't even care about how it looks like and think every bus looks the same.
Buses are interesting because
1) among other transportation, you won't ever see anything gets deployed like a bus. You could never say today the taxi cameoed at Woodlands yesterday and it is permanent in Ang Mo Kio right?
2) Every type of bus almost have different "voices". they sound unique
3) those who took note of the bodies of the bus will generally pay a little bit more attention and have their favourite type of bus. Different bus bodies appeal to different people and they findit interesting when it comes along
4) people who take bus everyday might have feelings towards it, but percentage very low lah
I think other people got better answers than me loh ... ... -

Whenever a Volgren Hino cameoed on 190 , plp thot its a "new" bus. Last time a mk2 bendy came and my mum exclaimed "wah new bus arh?"
my mum also said , "Wah other country de bus look so solid and nice. Singapore one look like easily fall apart (flimsy) one." She had no idea that the buses i showed are from the same manufacturer. -

then why do stamp collectors find stamps interesting?
cos got variety, some blue, some red, some green. and some are rare and worth alot.
then i say bus also liddat lor. got different types of bus, some the engine sound very unique, some the bodywork very nice, some the engine very powerful etc. different people got their favourite.
but u say stamp collector so common wat, bus fan not that many.
then what about, erm, handphone enthusiasts? i believe there are such people out there.
basically, if u see or experience something on a regular basis, u can develop a affinity to it. though the chance is not high, if not everyone living in sufficiently urbanised areas (ie with public transport eg buses) will become bus enthusiasts.
so wat is it that leads to this affinity developing in bus fans?
then ask urself: wat about stamp collectors? can u say what makes them interested in stamps? or muggers? wat makes them so interested in studying? or handphone enthusiasts? nature enthusiasts?
such things are very subjective. different people have different preferences. this preference leads to a liking, and maybe eventually a fanatism.
not just for bus fans, for enthusiasts of any kind. -

For me, although I do identify different types of buses, I am not really into the name and type of buses and gearboxes that they are using. Like for example, at a bus stop near Dieppe Barracks with 167, 169, 171 and 980, if one identifies a bus coming from a distance and it is a merc, there is a high chance that either 169 or 171 is coming. If it is a bendy, it is high chance that the bus will be 169. This gives me or everyone with an interest of spotting buses an advantage.
Besides, the sounds of the buses are unique. Even with buses of the same brand and type, the engines sound may be different due to external factors.
I am more into bus routes. There are so many ways to get to different places in Singapore and I can say Singapore is not so bad in terms of bus networks although there are definitely areas to improve on. I like to read Transitlink Bus Guides because it is a pocket sized book, with colourful labels and the details are clear. Besides, different bus services have different demands as can be seen by the dds and bendys deployed on selective services. It is rather interesting to identify the hotspots that create the demand. -
Actually there was a time, i ask my friend(Who is a non bus spotter, know nuts about bus) whether MK3 or MB 0405 newer? He says MB 0405 looks newer.. Another time, SBS 8021M cameo on Svc 185 and one pri school kids tell his mother that (" Wa!! new bus!!")..

LOL! the other time I told my friend the 0405 was bought in 1990, he don't believe, say the bus looks reasonably new. then the CAC DM 0405 he couldn't tell the bus used to be NAC. and oh yes, he mentioned AC very shiok.
