Motorists giving way to buses reduced waiting time by up to 80%
SINGAPORE : A simple act of motorists giving way to buses has reduced a passengerÂ’s average waiting time for a bus by as much as 80 percent.
SBS Transit said its 19—month survey also revealed that waiting time dropped by at least 38 percent when buses were not obstructed while exiting bus bays.
To encourage motorists to help the 2.2 million bus passengers have a smoother ride, the company will launch its second campaign to help spread the message among drivers.
Friendly drivers spotted giving way to buses will receive a S$10 petrol voucher and a thank you letter.
Starting in November, to spread the word even further, SBS Transit will also give out air fresheners in the shape of a bus, to drivers at seven McDonald’s drive—through outlets. — CNA /ls
not effective because most of them after pick up passengers go to other lane coz' the bus stop ahead is for different set of bus services.Originally posted by Frogleg888:Taking Sbst svc 13 travelling along Lavendar and Serangoon road at peak hour,i can feel how effective is the bus lane. But i heard the one at Eu Tong Sen street not so effective.![]()
Bus =/= Car.Originally posted by sinicker:i have mixed reactions with giving way to buses.
my experiences as i drive.
- if it's a two-lane rd and i'm on the left lane and see a bus exiting the bus bay ahead. if the other lane is clear i'll filter right and allow the bus to exit as per normal. do this lots of times.
- yellow box and even tho the area ahead of the yellow box got space, i wud stop and rather let the bus take the space and yellow box to cover up.
the WORST one EVER.
- yellow box. give way to bus. stays behind bus. green light... and you realise the bus is FREAKING SLOW and road-hogging. maybe bus is ahead of schedule. regrets giving way to bus.
so SBST, which one you want? can you promise motorists that if we give way, the buses wouldnt road-hog? please cover up traffic ahead promptly.
The problem is not that the bus is taking a long time to stop, its that the bus driver(some) drive damn slowly.Originally posted by Oceane:Bus =/= Car.
Bus weighs over 10 or 11 tonnes, a car is maximum 1 ton. Did you learn about inertia before? Objects with heavier masses takes a longer time to stop due to inertia. Do you want this to happen to the buses in Singapore, whereby they speed so as to satisfy the motorists's demands of high speed, then get involved into an accident?
Its not a matter of the buses being naturally slower to pick up or have slower max speed: its that alot of times the bus drivers drag their feet and drive deliberately very slowly probably because theya re ahead of scehdule. Seen this lots of times on the bus and in a carOriginally posted by Oceane:Bus =/= Car.

Ban cars. Then create our world class transport and cheaper bus ridesOriginally posted by oOprinceOo:that means dont need to wait ? sure? lol.
All I can say that is, the bus has every right to travel slow, because it's a heavy vehicle. Furthermore, the car has every right to switch lanes.Originally posted by Y_Shun:The problem is not that the bus is taking a long time to stop, its that the bus driver(some) drive damn slowly.
I see before cars being stucked behind some buses because its so slow and that the car just want to turn left into a carpark. Then something even more dangerous happens where by some motorists think they can drift and take over the bus.
dude. i'm not some car driver who has never taken public transport before. i know just how freaking slow some buses are when they're "supposedly ahead of schedule". other forum users can vouch this.Originally posted by Oceane:Bus =/= Car.

a heavy vehicle, yes. the bus doesnt have a right to travel slow.Originally posted by Oceane:All I can say that is, the bus has every right to travel slow, because it's a heavy vehicle. Furthermore, the car has every right to switch lanes.
If the car wanted to turn into a carpark, tailing the bus behind is the only choice.
If motorists want to drift and overtake, that's their own issue. Accident = their fault.
