Actually I sit Mk II, they still run very well, and some of the gearboxes are damn solid.
It is tuned to lock-up at second gear (short first-gear). -
There are some differences between SBST's O.405s and SMRT's O.405s. SBST's O.405s are MkIs which has a default geabox of W3D 080R (for the earliest O.405s)/ W3E110/2.2R/W3E 112/2.2R/W4E112/2.2R (the latter three for later versions). SMRT O.405s are MkIIs which have a default gearbox of ZF 4/5HP500. But I like the ZF MKIIIs, just like how I like the Voith MKIV dms. Maybe I just like buses that are not the norm.
Actually, many MKIIs lock-up at 1st gear. However I believe it's because the MKII's tuning is such that the gearbox is rather "loose" and hence goes into over-ride fairly easily. By default should be lock-up at 2nd, although there are some that appears otherwise. -
