  Another point which makes sense is someone who had said before you: "real gangsters talk abt brotherhood, & run big triad etc, not cheat bus companies of their bus fares lar". I would qualify it further to say that the real gangsters, if they see this kind of behaviour, would feel disgraced & it's possible that they might beat up this fake gangster because the real ones have some codes of honour to maintain.

  I am just an oldie & not an expert re: the gambling scenario in macau but what you heard may be true to some extent. If I am not wrong there is a main character who has major control of the casino there & you can see some significance if you can recall that our sg authorities objected to this main character when the granting of the licence to genting international was under consideration.
  
  Another point to remember is that common sense will tell you that gangsters are also intelligent people & what they want is to make money easily, peacefully & regularly without much complications. And if they can maintain peace & stability without the police coming in, what not?
  
  Btw as a parting shot my take of the so called geylang gangster is that he is not more than a mentally ill patient.

  Can someone help me with some ballpark figures for my project relating to Geylang groups and characters-
  
  1) What happens to Geylang after Ah Long Sang? Is there a overlord quietly influencing some of the lorongs OR it is controlled by several gangs, if any?
  
  2) Are there foreigner groups controlling certain trades (open air gamblings, street prostitution, etc) in Geylang as well?
  Or are they actually underdogs of some locals?
  
  3) What trades do these old timer gangsters or new ones involved?
  Do they control the prostitution trades in Geylang or it is just myths or no longer their trades.
  
  4) Do foreigners pimps / lookouts work under their own or under the direction of local gangsters?
