From yesterday Shin Min Daily News:
At 2 Nov 2008 3.30pm, there was a umbrella tree fell down along a stretch of Upp Thomson Road heading towards to city near SLE. All the affected vehicles have to make a U-turn at its carriageway back to the nearest junction, causing big congestion at there. Affected public buses ply along this road cannot U-turn due to its size, and passengers have to stuck there for long hours, until the fallen tree has been removed by NParks contractor at 2 hours later, which is 5.30pm. It is believed that the heavy downpour caused the soil to be softer, and resulted tree falling.
If u wait these bus services too long, that is the reason.

How come it's like that? I rmb reading MyPaper a few mths back and one stomper showed a picture of an electronic board displaying "Next bus for svc 61 - 91mins" and now the same scenario pops up again. Lucky got the electronic board to mention that frequency, otherwise god knows what the poor passengers can do during that 1+ hour at the bus-stop. It's ridiculous. Many would have given up waiting by then and hop on to other services or stg.

More likely that they have put buses without GPS installed on them.

This is one approach the bus industry here could take when it opens up to greater competition, said University of Sydney Professor David Hensher, a member of the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA’s) International Advisory Panel. He felt that “it is desirable” to start the process with competitive tendering to establish appropriate benchmarks, before moving on to long-term negotiated performance-based contracts. With limited economies of scale for bus operations above a fleet size of 500 buses, the Land Transport Masterplan said that the bus sector could potentially support more than two operators here. The Government is looking at introducing competitive tendering for the right to operate a package of bus services planned by the LTA. :Professor Kim Kwang Sik, who had overseen bus reforms in Seoul, said “substantial competition for the bus market through tendering” would reduce operating costs, while being responsive to commuters’ needs. Professor Vukan Vuchic, a consultant to the United States’ Department of Transportation, agreed. However,drawing from the example of many public transit agencies in the US who are contracting some bus services to private operators, he felt that coordination and control of services have become more complicated. Professors Hensher, Kim and Vuchic were among the six-member panel that met Transport Minister Raymond Lim yesterday. On the agenda:Central bus planning, enhancing contestability and integration of the various public transport modes. Prof Shigeru Morichi, president of the Institute for Transport Policy Studies in Japan, said that rail operators in his country compete to establish their public reputation. “An index of performance standards is published by the government so that commuters are aware of the service and performance level of each operator and this spurs them on to deliver their best services to commuters,” he said. The Government is looking to introduce greater competition in the rail industry here — through shorter operating licenses — to ensure that the operators continue to function efficiently and improve service standards. The LTA said it will study the panel’s recommendations. - TODAY
