Hi guys. Ever since i started school, i began taking 75's DAF everyday to school. I find it a very nice and comfy bus to take, not to mention its speedy acceleration. I wonder how you guys rate the DAFs? Im quite curious abt it.
If SMRT somehow brings in DAF, would you guys support it? (Its an "IF". Dont come reply me with answers "SMRT sure won't bring in one lah" kind of things)
I certainly won't mind. The DAF is one of my favourite model. I also like Bova coaches which is also under the VDL branding now.
For me, it's a yes... Certainly in overall, the rides in Service 75 buses for DAF has becoming more comfortable than the Scanias.. I will rate the DAFs 8.5 out of 10..
Yes, the DAFs are particularly nice and comfortable buses. And I love the gently sloping interior of the bus. It may look funny on the outside, but it nice on the inside.
I would not mind too, but I would gladly see a ZF equipped DAF city bus with engine power around 260-280bhp instead of the Scania's 230bhp, as that seems to be a little not adequate for high load situations...
I guess it might be just the number problem... 230 of Scania K230... 290 of Volvo B7RLE...
60hp difference...
i have however heard from some bus captains that TIBS/SMRT DAF220 is very prone to overheating and there can be 1-2 buses being hosed down with water at BB Interchange in some hot afternoons. BC would open up the front cover and start spraying or jetting water inside and sometimes a mechanic would be around to look out and check on the engine etc...
Being so, they are not alone, as some Habits laying over in the afternoon or even back from service have the same problem. 1177A (when still in service 106 KJDEP) have seen at least twice being hosed down with water and someone also put a fire extingusher near the engine area. DAF220 are not unique in overheating problems.
VDL is now the new name/company for DAF buses? Different from DAF that makes trucks liao? Kinda like the X95... :D
i love 172 DAF. one laned old cck rd going 90km/h with ease. only the annoying tee tee tee keeps sounding when its above 60km/h
Have been taking Sv 985 regularly to school.
It is better than Dennis Lance when it comes to the speeding part along PIE
Took two of the particular bus and it managed to hit above 60km/h
Agreed , those DAF can speed well especially on highways , but for apperance wise , looks nice and unique

975 also...
But now use Nissans
Unique buses whose likes are unlikely to ever come again.
Simply fell in love with this bus when I first saw it.

. try taking a CAC Nissan on 67 for the route and sitting at the back? i'm sure you would have a different perspective after that
i loved my 2 years of NS taking 172.
To me, DAF scores a perfect 10.

Been there done that. CAC can open windows. Not that bad. But after a while, rear seat gets abit hot. Still prefer riding UDs on 608 instead of 67 though.
Overall, I still like UDs.
DAFs are one of my favourite buses although nowadays I get to see them working on 925 except for a few cameos. DAFs can really chiong over the 80 km/h mark but some were limited by the speed limiter. That buzzing sound that you hear when the busy chiong was a warning that the driver exceeded the speed limit.
Anyway, comparing to UDs, DAFs are more comfortable due to it's gentle suspension.
UDs have better seats than DAFs but it's rough suspension pulled them behind the DAFs.
So DAF win UD. 7 - 5
2nd last seat on the right hand side of the DAF bus for me!
i really need generous legroom.
Seems like DAF takes a good score!
SMRT's DAFs are one of the only few VOITHed buses that does not suffer from the "dragging of the Voith retarder". For those who do not know what is "Dragging of the Voith retarder", try taking DM3500, bendies and CRBs. Whenever the bus suddenly 'brakes hard', thats the "dragging" part. The braking of DAF is EXTREMELY smooth. I really love it.
Just hope that there will be new DAFs in the future.
Anyway, just so you know, DAF (VDL Bus Intl) makes one of the most powerful coaches as well. Theres one coach (DAF SBR4000) that has 510Bhp. Its the highest i've came across. Its a chassis designed for 3 axle Double Deck coach. Any other bus that has higher HP do inform me pls.

DAF Bus business was separated from its truck making business and joined United bus in 1990 instead, forming DAF Bus Intl inititally. However, VDL Groep bought DAF Bus Intl after United bus collapsed, hence forming VDL Bus Intl.

wahaaa.. there was a time when nissans were deployed on 920.. if u took them b4 i think u will think that the bus will break up anytime when it go through the hump at high speed!

Trying taking 178's Nissan instead. They sometimes chiong thru humps and bumps at Woodlands Road there and go almost full speed at Kranji over the bumps. Take them at night. Trust me.

Why didn't SMRT replace the Windows to the non-openable type when they converted their buses to CAC.
