No wonder never seen it today
Regarding what everyone seems to be refering to as "cat calls" - there could be two possible howls. The first is the most noticeable - the upchange from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. The second is less noticeable but still worth mentioning - the downchange from 6th gear into 5th gear, especially under moderate braking.

Dave

TIB1089X very obvious and loud howl when upchange from 2nd to 3rd gear. BC jam accelerator.
I thought that these buses are fitted with hydraulic retarders ... they are not dependent on engine speed (if i'm not wrong). That would reduce the volume of the downshift "cat call".

Hydraulic retarders are fitted only inside gearboxes, not engines and most often, all Auto gearboxes used by bus have them.
Edit : Engines uses a separate secondary braking system. This system is known as exhaust brake or sometimes, jake brakes.
Engine speed is used to govern the bus speed, together with gear ratios. Just like a manual car, when you go downhill, its unwise to engage in high gear ratios, as the car would most likely roll down faster than you can stop it.
Hmm. Then since they operate inside the gearbox shouldn't they be independent of the engine speed? I am aware of the jake brake operation system but that is engine-based while a hydraulic retarder should be able to operate without the engine since it is gearbox-based.
In this case, does the retarder work on the input or the output shaft of the gearbox?
BTW the gearbox is the ZF 6 speeder rite?

They must have been inspired by my question of why they never paint the wheels black. Now the whole bus looks so dull.
similar to SBST's B7RLE front (they may forget how to paint then paint over the transformer), now we have the first and only SMRT bus that had sliver rims that looked nice and stupidely they paint it black again.
SMRT....haiz. thought they would brighten their new fleet up a little. Sad.
Next up from SMRT - removing dress rims off OC500LEs.
OMG why the wheels painted black? I though new bues the rims wont paint black like thos Kub currenly. Oh goodness now it looks ugly...
ok i get it. it looks so..........old.

painted. If you notice the front wheel's middle, it's matt black against glossy black for the whole wheel. original Front wheel painted The rear weel's hub is different from others, don't think any existing bus model wheels SMRT have could fit into it.original back wheel painted.
An irony
http://gogreenwithsmrt.com/ -> the bus in the flash, the wheels still white.
omfg.. why they must paint the rims black???
they wanna be diff from sbst's scanias??
honestly, it looks terrible..
