As soon as the bus transferring discount is in place.
I have a feeling that SBS will start removing non-profitable route, encouraging communters to transfer services thus increasing their revenue.
What do you think...

unlikely
because they've fare cap in place alrdy ![]()
I am wondering if the distance based fare system is integrated between transfers between trains and buses.
Yup. Non-profitable routes or perhaps marginal profitable routes will be axed. Coupled with the upcoming CCL and other lines, I wonder how many bus routes will be axed or shortened.
Single bus concession stamps or train concession stamps may not be as useful as of now as the utilisation of both rail and bus are highly entailed to reach the destination.
Even though now transfers seem to cost lesser, 60% of commuters who are now taking direct services will pay more.
However, one gd thing is that one may not have to wait for only one bus service to make progress in your journey to your destination provided one knows the way. The frequency of the "still surviving" bus services will perhaps be increased after all the streamlining.
Just a thought.
uhhh.. it would be senseless for me to make transfers just to get to orchard or town from home as i live in bukit panjang which has tons and tons of direct buses to town.
for example to orchard, i wouldn't take 184 or 75 to bukit timah and transfer to 174 or 77 whereby i can take 190 or 700 to orchard directly and it saves time too.
and to marine parade/potong pasir i can take 966 instead of taking 190 to town and transfer to 16 or NEL respectively.
another example was for people in AMK to get to hougang. They will have direct buses and they prefer to take that rather than taking NSL to Dhoby Ghaut and transfer to NEL to Hougang?
making the 60% pay more in favour of the 40% doesn't seem right as most people prefer direct buses in my opinion.
And CCL only had 3 train carriages, which means less capacity. If bus routes along CCL were to be axed or shortened, i would liken the situation to a fully packed train every time?
this definetely spell troubles for us ahead. xD

Its good.
For example..
From AMK to Serangoon.
There is 135 and 133.
If i take 133 as compared to 135, i need to pay an additional fareband. With the new fare structure in place, i eenjoy the same fare with greater choice.

Using your example, it is still possible to make transfers though it may seem senseless. It all depends on the situation that one is in. Suppose if several 190 buses that come are packed to the door especially for the case at Bt Panjang Rd Blk 270, one can consider taking 960 to Bt Timah Rd and transfer to 171 or 700 if 960 buses are not full in the first place. Notice that the route runs very similar with 700.
As a result, demand can be spread across several neighbouring services.
My house to J. East
Now: 105
Future: 153/56/105 -> 985 -> 66
My house to Tampines
Now: 28
Future: 28/73/88/155/157/159/163/231 -> 8 -> walk a bit or 966 -> 23
In the end it all benefits.
Tampines Ave 1 (Safra Tampines) - Toa Payoh Int

Distance-based through fare is meant to eliminate the transfer penalty for multiple transfers on the same route taken. As 133 and 135 take different routes from Ang Mo Kio to Serangoon, it is unlikely that the fare differential (which arises from the different route distance) will be corrected.

ok lor. i take 123 from Bt Purmei to Bt Merah 67 cents lah. Cant be right?
In the end, the new fare system is not distance based fares and is still based on the current existing system.

The current revision in fares is just a transition to distance-based through fare system in 2009.
This means that in 2009, those taking direct services will pay even more than now and those making transfers will pay even lesser than now?
Just want to ask, wasn't Transitlink supposed to introduce a Season Pass (like SBST's) for all commuters? I remember reading it in the LTA Transport review, right?

I believe the authorities will strike a balance between the two areas with regards to the fares set by them. I am just wondering the reason why they have introduced this transition phase instead of implementing directly the distance based fare system in 2009.
1. More administrative work and programming have to be done. Costs go up.
2. Over 50% of the commuters are taking direct services to their destinations according to a Straits Times article dated 12 July 2008.
so we are looking froward to true (through) fares? one fare for one journey?
i am. was once proposed by a friend long long time ago and i liked the idea....so i seriusoly support this "through" fares.

actually BCP is similar to season pass liao,,,anyway, SBST must had opposed to tat idea because it wanna start the season pass themselves....
