Say Adult Bus Fare.
71 cents is the minimum fare. You only have 40 cents rebate. Means the next transfer you pay at least 31 cents more for the ride.
Example:
Take 190 from Choa Chu Kang Int To Dhoby Ghaut MRT
Total Fare: $1.43.
Take 190 from Choa Chu Kang Int To Orchard MRT
Fare is $1.43
Transfer NSL from Orchard MRT To Somerset MRT
Fare is $0.70 (Less 40 cents rebate)
Transfer 700 from Somerset MRT To Dhoby Ghaut MRT
Fare is $0.31 (Less 40 cents rebate)
Total Fare: $2.44
Take 190 from Choa Chu Kang Int To Whitley Road
Fare is $1.33
Transfer 700 from Whitley Road To Dhoby Ghaut MRT
Fare is $0.93 (Less 40 cents rebate)
Total Fare: $1.86
You pay 43 cents to $1.01 more for making this transfer effort.
Rule of Thumb is:
Cheapest is straight bus/train and lesser transfers as much as possible. =)
Does this mean that the rebate for each transfer is fixed at 40 cents?

not really take direct bus = cheaper
Once my mom went off to drop off my maid at the agent's house at aljunied. we set off from our house in toa payoh.
Take bus 155 to Merpati Rd. $0.93
Walk out to aljunied rd. If we took 155 straight back it would be another $0.93
However, we took a 100 for one stop before changing to the 155.
100 from Aljunied Rd to Aljunied Rd = $0.71-$0.40 = $0.31
155 from Aljunied Rd back home = $0.93-$0.40 = $0.53
in the end, we saved 9 cents.

Means you expoilted the loophole, in this case taking a return trip by using another service within the transfer time limit.
Does the $1.90 cap apply to TIBS buses as well?

No

i thought i saw there was rebate applied.
I'd like to share some of my thoughts about this change after returning from my trip to Wonju, ROKorea.
Facts to note:
Wonju + its neighbouring municipalities is roughly the size of Singapore(ok, minus LCKang).
Public transportation(buses) is owned by the state(essentially one or two bus operators) giving standard fare. The Wonju City Hall(city government) profits from operating the services(there are 500 routes) and does not "subsidize" fares. They also pay market rate for Diesel and CNG.
___________________________________________________________
Wonju city, together with larger cities like Seoul, Busan, Gangneung(pronounced "Kang-ner-ng"), and Cheongju etc. have a standard fare regardless of distance.
Elementary School(Primary School) student fee: â‚©700 ~ S$0.65
Middle School(Secondary School + JC) student fee: â‚©950 ~ S$0.90
Adult fee: â‚©1280 ~ S$1.25
A similar system like the ez-link card is existant. Essentially you can travel for unlimited trips for that fare in one day. If you are paying by cash(â‚©), you'd get a ticket and with that ticket you can transfer buses without paying(just by showing the ticket to the bc).
This system is more desirable and might work in Singapore. But then Koreans are not that kind of people to spend time joyriding and enjoying themselves...
Should such a system be present in Singapore, would you be for it? Apparently for the Korean government this system happens to be profitable.
Let's just put it in the Singaporean perspective.
Flat fare except for premium, cityshopper, etc.
Primary School Student: S$0.80
Sec School Student: S$1.25
Tertiary School Student: S$1.75
Adult: S$2.50
Comments? Please don't flame. It is just my view.
Crap, 192 transfer 252 no rebate (done within 20 mins)
174 transfer 7 at Dhoby Ghaut also no rebate (done within 10 mins, unless they tell me card spoil if you go toilet).
There's 8 and 90 which from somewhere (iirc Macpherson) to TPY has different fare stages in total despite travelling the some route as stated by a forumer here before...
Seems that the transfer rebate for 1.90 is still valid issit going to be removed?
