"Give way to buses" scheme to cut travelling time
SINGAPORE: Bus commuters can expect a smoother ride with the implementation of the Mandatory Give Way To Buses Scheme.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) says the pilot scheme will be rolled out along three roads from 20 December.
Under the new scheme, some 23 bus stops along Ang Mo Kio Ave 8, Bukit Batok East Ave 3 and Toh Tuck Road will be affected.
LTA said these roads are often congested and buses have a hard time exiting from the bus bays.
In a study conducted earlier, LTA said buses spent about 10 per cent of travelling time trying to get out of bus bays.
To reduce travelling time for passengers, LTA said the scheme has to be introduced.
Dr Chin Kian Keong, LTA's chief engineer of transportation, said: "I
think we'd like to widen all roads if that's the case. Unfortunately,
that's not the case in Singapore. There's a limited amount of road
space and it's because of this reason, because there's a limit to road
space, we need to make sure that more people get to their destination
faster and the way to do it is to give way to buses which carry much
more people than cars. With that in place, more people should be able
to get to their destinations faster."
Under the pilot initiative, special yellow boxes and triangular
"give way to buses" markings will be painted in front of selected bus
stops along the three roads.
Signs will be installed ahead of these bus stops to indicate to
motorists to slow down and give way to buses exiting the bus bays.
LTA said motorists who flout the rule will be fined S$130.
Most commuters 938LIVE spoke to, welcomed the new move.
"Maybe, (it can) help us to save time," said a commuter.
But some motorists said the new scheme is unnecessary.
"It's not really necessary because there is already a bus lane
there. So when (it's) peak period, no private vehicles are able to go
into that lane, so the bus will not have problem (getting out of the
buy bay). Outside the peak period, there are not many vehicles around,
so actually there's no need for the rules," said a motorist.
LTA said it will assess the scheme after a three-month trial before deciding whether or not to extend it to more locations.

What a draconian new ruling.
Its better to encourage motorists to give way to buses (whether they want to or not is another matter), rather than to do it the hard way. 130 bucks is wayyyyy too much.
waste ppl time only
Ya, BB east Ave3 and Toh Tuck Rd are 2 lanes road ... i foresee jams ahead ...
And probably some near-accidents too. The BCs think they can now exit the bus bay at will while the motorist thinks the bus is still at the bus stop picking up passengers.

Good what.at least now car drivers will be quite scared of buses.because the way some car drivers block the buses is very irritating.especially taxi drivers.hope this scheme can bring some fear into them.

This is what happens when too many ppl drive, government try to force ppl to take public transport by jamming up the whole place and make public transport maybe even faster than cars. I wont be surprised if... expwys have bus lanes too.

What car and taxi drivers scared of buses? So lame. -.-" I'd rather the planning authorities delve into more pertinent issues as to:-
1. What are other more important factors why buses are late/packed to the brim?
2. Why aren't some people willing to give way in the first place?
Rather than focusing on such nitty-gritty stuff and seizing the chance to fine people. Really sad if motorists choose to give way because of fear rather than intrinsic kindness and graciousness. This is also analagous to treating the symptoms rather than the illness itself. A fine city indeed!
sad....sg pple need law to ask them to know some common sense
it has been this way since we started on anything ...
Bukit Timah Road should have it as those Sv 174e simply love to go through these roads instead of Holland Rd.
will not work.
sometimes i nice, i give way to buses...
only to realise the BC drive damn slow coz he's early. den must switch lane. haizx.
if the buses got front facing camera then the flouting motorists surely kena fined.
just this morning I saw a cab and a truck driving on the bus lane...
maybe we just need to fine people then people will learn.

at the end of the day, itis kinda sad when a gov have to nanny it ppl to be courteous to one another with laws and rules.
take the Simei Ave exit towards Expo from PIE(Changi Airport) at 8.30am.
see if you're still smiling after that.
i dont take this route. but i can understand their agony each day.
what if a taxi alights his passenger at the end of the bus bay and the bus must occupy a bit of the other lane too to exit? ![]()

Really redundant for the implement of fine.Only adding more salt to wound.More and more bus drivers now can haolian thinking they are always right!
Your car or the bus bigger?
You dare to not give way to the bus? ![]()

you have obviously never seen our sociopath motorists in action picking up, waiting for, or dropping off people at the bus stop outside far east plaza. they don't believe that buses have the right to use the bus stop ![]()
more food for thought:
our motorists are also known for refusing to give way to ambulances ![]()
haha, then all will change to riding motors soon. Then chiong between lanes.
