Did you know?
Ever noticed a loud whirring sound coming from a SBS mercedes bus ride?
Dun seem to be part of the retarder?
Why its the Hub reductor.
Technology is so advanced that a device was invented to incerease the efficeincy and reliabilty of a very fast turning wheel of a vehicle.. (we care bus so vehicle now is bus..wuahaha) . hub reductors reduce the spin on the wheel to achive the above aims.(add below aims as well)
Folks, you dun want ur bus wheel to go spinning recklessly posing a danger at fast speeds. nor do we want to have energy and spin build up on the wheel causing jerky and uneven rides. Energy is not to be wasted and lots of enegry means lots of fast moving parts, means wear and tear on gears n parts. Less wear and tear on parts is a good aim in bus workshops.
The process of a hub reductor working is called hub reduction. the full system is normally referred as hub reduction axle. because the thing is attached to axle of bus.
normally we shorten the long word to hubs.
"eg: hey this merc has hubs!"
" hey the hubs are working, that sound is nice"
Note: thhe hub is actually part of a axle component of the wheel in laymen language..confusion lor...but nvm we used to it le.
how does it work? i will use the word hubs for hub reduction .
Most hubs work by principle working against the moving gears of a bus. Gears (lets called them forward moving drive gears - subset of gearbox) exist within the axle area, these gears spin the wheel forwards. Hubs (used loosely in bus fan sense please) consist of oppsite spinning gears (usually in the format of reverse spinning plantary gears) which work agaisnt this forward spin to reduce the spin on wheel.
it is this friction like working against mechnaism that causes the whirring sound at the wheel area. The louder the whirr, the harder the hubs gears are working to fight the wheel..hahaha
they may be other system of hubs (loose use) but i only understood the planetary gear system one.
which bus types have hubs?
hubs are exclusive to certain German models of buses. these are (older models of)
MAN
Mmercedes benz
Certain Dennis tridents on planet earth have hubs.
hubs sound nice on old MAN buses and are a prominent feature to identify if the bus is a German make bus.
The dominance of hypoids over hubs in the new millennium
In today's modern buses, few bus manafacturers will come with hub reduction axles. Sad to say, the technology has grown probably old. Another form of system is being used to achieve efficeint and reliable wheel drive and spin. Which is
Hypoids
Hypoids in the sense is typically a single hub reduction system. So some bus fans may call a hub reduction axle a - double hypoid system. Weird as it may sound, the principles of this is not fully understood by the author yet.
Hypoids are fitted on todays Merc and MAN products. It is hard to find a new bus with hubs. Disappoiintly the new OC500LE or MAN 18.240 come with hypoids.
Scania K230UBs have hypoids as well as the Volvo b7RLE Mark 3 SBS8030
end article - hypoid article soon maybe
