Mixed reactions to public transport fare changes
SINGAPORE: Come April, public transport fares may be lower, but commuters have mixed reactions to the changes.
For a group of polytechnic students, they were not expecting any
revisions. Hence, the S$2 to S$4 reduction in concession-pass fares was
a pleasant surprise.
But they said the changes do not address the issue of polytechnic
students paying higher concession pass fares than their counterparts in
junior colleges and institutes of technical education (ITEs).
Still, they agreed that the reduction is a good move towards reforming the fare structure system.
Ong Kian Min, the vice-chairman of the Government Parliamentary
Committee for Transport, said the fare changes are a good gesture by
the transport operators and he is satisfied with the results of the
review.
With the revised fares, commuters can save a minimum of 2 cents per
trip. But as small as the savings may be, commuters said they will have
a maximum impact.
Some commuters said the changes will help to ease the financial burden
brought on by the recession. "At least better than nothing," said a
commuter.
"Maybe can save more, can do something else. Can buy some books and then can eat better," said another.
But most said the changes are too insignificant to make much of a difference.
"Two cents savings, might as well don't save. Really rather not save," said a commuter.
"Even if you talk about 50 cents, (when) you want to buy something,
I think you can hardly get anything for 50 cents. So two cents is
really nothing to me," said another.
"I think, adjust (the fares) up to three cents or five cents (will be) better," said a third commuter.
"If profit margins aren't so affected, why not reduce more to help more of the public," said a fourth.
Others said they hope to see more reductions at the next fare revision exercise.

i thought the train fare is counted as a single trip only?
1 cent x dont know how many commuters who use their svcs mean a lot of money too...
Give you drumstick now, take away your chicken later.
The new fares are good.
This means that from April 1st the cheapest bus fare from Joo Chiat Complex to YMCA is 88 cents (Fare bands 1 + 1) compared to 102 cents (Fare bands 1 + 1) or 113 cents (Fare band 3).
Similarly, the bus fare from Joo Chiat Complex to Capitol Building will be reduced to 88 cents (Fare bands 1 + 1) from 93 cents (Fare band 2).
oil price also dropping
not factored in for reduction?
Finally... concession prices dropped... first time since I existed...

SINGAPORE: A day after announcements that bus and train fares will go down by 2 cents, SBS Transit and SMRT said they would also be cutting fares for their non—basic bus services by up to 20 cents.
The reduced fares will last for 15 months from April 1 this year to June 30 next year.
SBS Transit operates 60 non—basic bus services, including Premium, Nite Owl, Fast Forward and Chinatown Direct.
A ride on the Nite Owl service from the city to HDB towns will cost S$3.80, instead of S$4.
Fares for SMRT’s Express NightRider bus services will start from S$1.50, while premium bus fares above S$3.50 will come down by 20 cents.
Together with the discounts for basic bus and train services, SBS Transit said the relief measures will cost it S$42.7 million over the 15—month period, more than the S$21.5 million that it would be getting from Budget 2009.
SMRT said its measures, including a S$300,000 donation to help needy consumers with their transport costs, will cost the company S$37.3 million.

SMRT gives commuters further rebates with lower fares on SMRT premium and express services
"Following the reduction in bus and train fares, SMRT will lower fares for its Premium and Express bus services to help commuters of non-basic bus services cope with the economic crisis. admin details need to be ironed out. All along when they announce fare adjustments it takes effect about 1.5months from the time they announce it.
Whoever had to time to analyse the fare changes since 2002 would have noticed we are getting the cheapest fare from 2002 to date. This is of course ignoring CPI, wages, inflation and price level changes. hahaha...
Folks, for all-bus journeys, with the reduction in bus fares, some transfers involving 5 fare stages and above are cheaper than direct journeys.Very often the savings are a couple of cents. But there are two cases with quite good savings. They are
Something to note if you make these journeys daily.

- 12 fare stages. Direct = $1.21. Transfer 4 + 4 + 4 = $1.07 ( save 14 cents) or Transfer 4 + 8 = $1.10 (save 11 cents).

Hmm, good point. When they increase the rebate to inplement throughfares, wouldn't it tip the balance furthur in favour of the people who transfer? LTA may need to overhaul the fare stage system, like standardising the fare bands to 4 stages each.
Would SBST print new fare cards?

i find that a 50c transfer rebate is over the limit already. if they want to have a distance-based fare system in the future, they must know how to work towards it, not overshooting it.
