With the demise of 390, a service 16E was introduced to as a form of "fast forward" to then svc 16 which was extended to Airport. 16E was later changed svc no to 36. Service 16E skipped national Sstadium and went by ECP but served parkway to Airport.
Service 16E was not introduced when SBS withdrew service 390 in 1993. Many complained about the long journey time between Orchard and Changi Airport on service 16.
SBS introduced service 16E in January 1994, a peak hour one-directional service between Bukit Merah and Changi Airport. From the airport, it run express along ECP except for one stop at East Coast Park CP F3, then exit at Rochor Rd, turn to Beach Rd before calling at the 1st stop in the city (Stamford Rd outside Capitol). In the city, after calling at the last stop (Bras Basah Rd outside Raffles Hotel), it run express to airport via Beach Rd, Ophir Rd, ECP. The service did not go to Suntec / Marina Centre and Marine Parade.
Service 16E was renumbered service 36 in December 1997. In September 1998, service 36 was converted into a whole-day service and amended to loop at Tomlinson Rd instead of terminate at Bukit Merah, and also amended to ply Marine Parade. Also, service 16 was cut back to Marine Parade terminal.

Service 36 route is similar but not the same as service 390. I will post the full route of service 390 later.
How Express 518 came about:
Express 503: Introduced in May 1997. Peak hours one-way service. From Tampines interchange to Temasek Ave in AM peak. From Anson Rd to Tampines interchange in PM peak. In Sep 1999, amended and re-numbered Express 505.
Express 505: Re-numbered from Express 503 in Sep 1999. Loop service between Pasir Ris interchange and Jln Bukit Merah / Alexandra Rd / Telok Blangah Rd. In Sep 2000, amended and re-numbered Express 518.
Express 518: Re-numbered from Express 505 in Sep 2000. Loop service between Pasir Ris interchange and Orchard Rd / Marina Centre.
Continuing from above.

LOW ridership has seen SBS Transit take its CityShopper bus service off the road.
From Monday, bus services 578, 579 and 581, which take commuters from Tampines, Punggol and Sengkang to Orchard Road, will be withdrawn.
Serving fewer stops, the three premium bus services had provided a direct bus ride for commuters heading to Orchard Road and City Hall during weekday afternoons and weekends.
Fares cost $3.10 or $3.40, and standing passengers were not allowed, which guaranteed everyone a seat.
Despite the perks, daily ridership for the three services has fallen to a low of 185 commuters per day for all three services, said SBS Transit spokesman Tammy Tan.
Launched in December 2007, the operator's CityShopper service started with eight services, which ferried commuters from heartland estates like Ang Mo Kio and Bedok to the downtown shopping belt.
On the first weekend the services were launched, about 2,600 commuters used the speedy service.
But since then, ridership has dipped, prompting SBS Transit to gradually pull the services.
Last July, four services were withdrawn. Three months later, a fifth was suspended. The operating hours of the three remaining services were also shortened.
They now run only from noon to 4.30pm on weekdays and 10am to 9pm on weekends, at a frequency of about 30 minutes.
When The Straits Times took a ride on service 578 this week, there were only two other passengers on board the bus en route to town.
Commuter Jean Sim, 35, said this is a common sight.
'Sometimes, I will have the whole bus to myself,' said the teacher who lives in Sengkang. She uses service 578 only once a month to get to town.
When the service is withdrawn, she will have to take a bus from home to Sengkang MRT station and take the North-East Line to Dhoby Ghaut, before switching to the North-South Line to City Hall.
'It's a pity that they are stopping the service. I would be willing to pay up to $5 if they shorten the waiting time,' said Ms Sim.
Another commuter, who declined to be named, said that perhaps the CityShopper services could have had better publicity.
'I didn't know about it until I saw the poster one day at the bus stop,' said the 58-year-old, who takes service 578 from home to the city to run errands.
Besides the CityShopper services, two of eight Nite Owl services were also withdrawn by SBS Transit last year.
Such services run from midnight to 2am on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays, taking commuters back home from the city.
Other niche services like Chinatown Direct, which takes commuters from the heartland to Chinatown, are still doing well, said SBS Transit's Ms Tan.

today ST Home page i think page 4 feat SBS2684P on 579 and about it's withdrawn of CS svcs
I think if they had introduced in Jurong area, the demand would be higher.

i doubt so
sv502's demand is very high
Originally posted by chickenlittle2:I think if they had introduced in Jurong area, the demand would be higher.
Where should it ply if you suggest?
If talking about Pioneer Rd North/Jurong West area, 502 is able to handle the load and frequency is better than a premium service.

CiTYSHOPPER 580?

Don't mentioned it, Cityshopper 580 demand can't even reached more than 10 people.

Jurong west & east area got Express 502 already and futhermore by introducing 1 premium service to ply to orchard the demand will be even worse cause got Express 502 serving that area. What's more frequency for Express 502 is higher and cheaper than the premium service.

Haha... I know... xD
Each time I am waiting for Express 518 or CityShopper 579, Express 502 will always past by the bus stop 3 times, then Express 518 will arrive at the bus stop. There is nobody in the bus but Express 502 still come in double decker at non-peak hour.

but 502 too slow for pple staying at the Jurong West Side. Just like how popular 502A can be in the morning and evening.
Em.. I see the feasibility of running like that..
Jurong West 9X, Ave 5, Ave 3, St 23, Corporation Rd/Dr, Yung Ho Rd,Corporation Rd, AYE(Express), City Bound.

i dont foresee better riderships compared to 578, 59 or 581
Express 518A and Express 518B demand are also very high after 6pm.
Around this time, the bus will always be very packed.
For Express 502, I don't see the demand for double decker at non-peak hour. Maybe Yes for peak-hour.
