Nice question...i did not realise that.. lol

They skipped this every a certain no. of buses. Eg SMB49X and SMB50R. Where T? They left it out on purpose or because of some other explanation.

It's the calculation
For SBS Transit Buses [SBS Registration Numbers]
2 - (5 X 1st Number) - (4 X 2nd Number) - (3 X 3rd Number) - (2 X 4th Number)
For SMRT Buses [TIB Registration Numbers]
7 - (5 X 1st Number) - (4 X 2nd Number) - (3 X 3rd Number) - (2 X 4th Number)
For SMRT Buses [SMB Registration Numbers]
9 - (5 X 1st Number) - (4 X 2nd Number) - (3 X 3rd Number) - (2 X 4th Number)
Using the result, mod the number with 19, you will get a number from 0 to 18. Refer to the list below for the suffix.
1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, 4 = D, 5 = E, 6 = G, 7 = H, 8 = J, 9 = K, 10 = L, 11 = M, 12 = P, 13 = R, 14 = S, 15 = T, 16 = U, 17 = X, 18 = Y, 0 = Z
You can mod the number by 19 using Google. For example, if the result is -156, type ' -156 mod 19 ' into the Google search bar and it would calculate the answer.

That's complicated. Anyways thanks for explaining....

In simpler terms, its a checksum. And if its still too complicated, the checksum is basically something (letters in this case) that allows people (well, basically the police) to check if the car plate is valid and not a forged one.
So for example, if someone decides to print a vehicle plate of TIB927X (instead of TIB927J) and stick on their vehicle, then the authorities can easily identify its fake because of the wrong letter (should be J, but its showing X).

Oh okay. Thanks for the explaining too...
It's not really that complicated, even though it looks like it does. For example, I want to check whether SBS8888D is a valid rego, so let's do a little bit of Maths
2 - (5 X 8) - (4 X 8) - (3 X 8) - (2 X 8) = -110
Then I type "-110 mod 19" into the Google Search bar, which will then give this:
(-110) mod 19 = 4
Since the answer is 4, I check for the suffix associated with 4, in this case, which is D.
So that makes, SBS8888D a valid rego.
And for 3 digit regos, you take the first number as zero. And (for fun) i show you a demo on it.
For checking TIB868X
7 - (5 X 0) - (4 X 8) - (3 X 6) - (2 X 8) = -59
(-59) mod 19 = 17
Since 17 = X
So that makes TIB868X

Oh okay thank you very much...... Understood now. :D

Sometime in Nov / Dec 2003. The services that uses were the Jurong Industrial Services.
