Service numbers always play a part as I have mentioned before many times...
Hi mr TIB1234T, which month will that be for sbs 164? If it is true it goes to smrt territory, it is good. Better than always go from Punggol to the same old few places such as sengkang/kovan/Hougang/serangoon central. It is time for some other places. Cheers.

Hi mr carbikebus, looks possible but need wait for official news since nobody can confirm. At least this time round, it will be different from all the usual suspects like sengkang/Hougang/serangoon. Cheers.

3rd quarter i believe since it was in the LTA BSEP Improvement news last time about the new svc from Punggol... Didn't get hold of which month...
Seeing how both 161 & 168 terminates at woodlands, it's quite possible that it'll be the same for 164 as well.

Along the rt, near or around the North got 160, 161, 162, 163, 165, 166, 167, 168 & 169, so 164 gets to the North is no surprise...
Clementi is not under SMRT territory nor in the North side...

How can you confirm that 164 going to SMRT territory? when 164 rumour first sprung up a couple of months ago, ppl were saying 164 will be going to Tampines, then another rumour it's for Sengkang west then now Woodlands/Sembawang. So which one is it?
My best guest, 164 from Punggol to Toa Payoh, passes through, Punggol West, Seletar Camp, Sengkang West, Sin Ming Ind Est, Upper Thomson, Toa Payoh. Upper Thomson got 162, 163, 165, 166, 167 right?

Haven't got info about the route other then the destination, so likely it'll be like this:
PG > SK > HG > YCK > Upp Thomson > SLE > (SMRT area)

Hi mr TIB1234T, hip hip hooray. At least the bus route planners have it right this time. They choose a different destination other than Hougang/sengkang/serangoon central from Punggol. We will continue to wait for news as usual. Nothing we can do except waiting. Cheers.
Looking at the route i suspect to Bt Panjang
Originally posted by TIB1234T:Service 164 is confirmed coming soon this year, plying to one of the SMRT territories again while SMRT still stuck on their own place since LTA didn't extend any SMRT svc so far into SBST territory estate...
So, overall those mentioned before like 49, 102 & 357, we'll just have to wait...
SMRT 860 will be quite suspicious in these 2 years...
Service 49 was already introuduced and it was amended to ply Corporation Drive, Yung Ho Road and Yuan Ching Road

Yes, but 49 will be extended to Jurong East as some of your might already have known...
If we look at the service number 164, possibilities (among SMRT territories) are:
- Woodlands: There are services 161, 168 and 169 there. But doesn't make sense to me as there are already many services such as 161, 168, 858, 969 to Woodlands passing by Punggol. And doesn't make sense to use SLE to Woodlands as there's 161 for NE side, and NSL and TEL for YCK and Upp Thomson.
- Sembawang: There are services 167 and 169 (to some extent) there. Possible as Sembawang already needs many more services, and there's development at Yishun North (hence Canberra MRT). But still doesn't make sense to ply SLE (in fact, even less sense).
- Bukit Panjang: If 164 really plies SLE, then I guess this should be the best answer... And Bukit Panjang really needs a service to NE side. But service number wise, the only justification is 184. And maybe 174 to Beauty World.
- Bukit Batok: SMRT is gonna lose it anyway... But at least there is 174 there so it makes some sense to use the number 164.
Anyway, no matter which SMRT territory it is, good news for Punggol residents who are dying for new services. But, IMHO, let's not be too excited for now... In case it ends up like the Punggol-Tampines 164 or Punggol-Sengkang West 164.

Hi mr array88, there is a big difference. Sbs 161, 168, smrt 858, 969 are just passing by TPE stop nearby Punggol. They are not dedicated services going into Punggol. Punggol has so many HDB flats and those mentioned services passing by TPE stop only serve a few blocks directly. All the rest still need to transfer from other buses to this stop and worse cross the super long bridge. So your statement about many services to woodlands hold no truth.
Let's choose to believe TIB1234T since he is so sincere to inform all of us here. He may have known the exact destinations for both ends already. One side is Punggol and one side is SMRT territory. Let's give him benefit of the doubt because he may be bounded by rules not to divulge as he may be a high ranking officer with the relevant authorities. Cheers.
But isn't Bukit Panjang and Bukit Batok too far from Punggol already? I thought LTA's policy now is to implement short haul trunk routes...164 might be exceptional though.

162 is Upp Thomson...
161/168 were exceptions to follow 169 at Woodlands as SBST used to operate 169
160 is just to follow the numbering of 170

Numbering or not, eventually there would still be deviations. Perhaps for convenience' sake.
41 and 49 are the smallest service numbers that only serve the west side (not counting the cross-island ones such as 14 or 30). Previously it was 78 and 79. Neighbouring services 39, 40, 42, 50 ... all do not.
Express service range 500-521 used to be shared between PTOs. Now SMRT uses funny numbers such as 868, 951E and 982E.
140 could have served Toa Payoh, to complete the 139-145 set.
175 could have passed by Bt Batok, to complete the 173-178 set.
858, after being ejected from Yishun Int when extended to CGA, didn't get its number changed to 968 or whatnot. Now it can't complete Yishun's 851-860 set.
Too many.
At the end of it, I have decided I can't deduce particular patterns from service numbers alone now. Maybe still possible for obvious ones such as those in the feeder (220-389, 800-819, 900-922, 940-949) ranges, but not for the in-between services (68, 71, 102, 152, 164 etc.) anymore.
Lastly ... just my own thoughts, I'd really like to see 164 go to Bt Panjang.

Hi mr AJQZC, a service from Punggol to north of singapore of bukit panjang will be really a break in tradition for LTA to introduce a long route. Q3 2015 is not too far away. Let's wait for good news. Cheers.

You forgot 48 which originate from Buona Vista(West)...Woodlands also got 856 to complement 858..Like Bishan only 51 doesnt even ply or terminate at Bishan but at least it meet 57,58,59 along e way..Yishun also dont have 850 not the express version.

Like I said, those listed are just some of the numbering inconsistencies. You can name them, but the list just goes on.
As for the first point, I was talking about strictly west-side serving services, namely 41, 49, 78, 79, 98 and the like. 48 falls in the same category as cross-islanders 7, 10, 14, 30, etc., so I didn't bother mentioning it.
