Loading Analysis on sv 969 from Tampines Interchange

17.37 - Rigid
17.44 - 3539D E500
Tampines Interchange -- 101 (around 13 in queue)
TPE Stop -- 97 (-11/7) quite a few ppl use it as fast service and ran to x-over to sv 27 on stop in front... they could have also taken 27 from Tampines but instead decided to do this!!
Jalan Kayu -- 100 (-5/8)
Lentor Ave -- 100 (0/0) all stops
Yishun Ave 2 -- 99 (-3/2), 69 (-38/8) khatib mrt, 70 (-3/4), 69 (-4/3), 89 (-30/50) yishun mrt... lot of people boarded.. checked transport.sg bus in front was 05 mins lead time and one behind was 08 mins. 965 showed 17 and 19 mins. 858 showed 16 and 26 mins (even after all this fleet add!?!?!)
Interesting to note is that within Yishun 78 pax alighted, meaning bulk of 969 commuters from Tampines are Yishun goers and not really to Woodlands.
Yishun Ave 5 -- 88 (-6/5), 51 (-42/5) wow this one stop before Sembawang road had 42 people alighting... must be mostly fromYishun MRT who use it as feeder
Sembawang Rd -- 55 (-7/11), 58 (-3/6)
Gambas Ave -- 58 (-2/2)
Woodlands Ave 7 -- 64 (-2/8), 49 (-20/5), 39 (-16/6) Admiralty MRT, 37 (-5/3), 32 (-8/3), 28 (-6/2)
Peak loading = 101 pax.
High alighting points = Khatib MRT, Yishun MRT, Yishun Ave 5 (bef Sembawang Rd), Woodlands Ave 7 (stop bef Admiralty MRT), Woodlands MRT.

** If you see almost every bus is a SD during this time... and every bus almost was full packed to door (PTD)
** The downroute DDs on sv 70 had some bad luck where they came always immediately after another 70
** Almost all buses on sv 70 coming from Shenton Way were SDs
-- My calculation is that post 6pm... most of the DDs will kick in on sv 43 and sv 70
Service 43/M. Only 20% of the buses were DDs after 6pm. Opposite had half DD.
Service 70 50% SD/DD, though two SDs bunched.

Most 43 DDs are timed between 5-6pm to do Punggol to UEC to cater to the Paya Lebar crowd towards Marine Parade. Given 43M/70 is there to meet needs from NEX to YCK road. 43 bus DDs come back around 7pm to pick up the crowd from NEX towards Buangkok Green. The 43M DDs are also timed for this.
70 also operated mostly SDs until 6pm from Shenton Way after which for the next one hour it operates mostly DDs... This is to cater to the Shenton-Guillemard crowd as well as picking up pax from NEX after 7pm.
So basically capacity is huge post 6.30-7pm at NEX but before that it is majorly catered by SDs. 70 does get DD downroutes from NEX between 5-7pm. This is done by 2 random DDs (spotted 72B DDs also doing this many times!)
Loading on E500 sv 964 @ 18.55 hours from WRI (was lucky to get 3531A right after I alighted from 969)
WRI -- 21 (0/21) ... 3 pax on upper deck
WDL Ave 7 -- 20 (-3/2), 15 (-8/3), 16 (-3/4), 74 (-2/60) Admiralty MRT.. 28 pax on upper deck... this means lower deck had 46 pax.. calculation accurate as alighting at Admiralty was only 2 pax
WDL Ave 6 -- 76 (-2/4), 61 (-17/2), 41 (-19/0)
WDL Ave 9 -- 19 (-22/0), 4 (-15/0)
WDL Loop -- 10 (-2/8), 24 (0/14), 42 (0/18), 52 (0/10)
WDL Link -- 61 (-2/11)
WDL Ave 9 -- 72 (0/11), 80 (0/8) please note that the bus did WDL industrial sector after PM peak as it was around 19.30 hours.. pax on upper deck 44, pax on lower deck 36, 79 (-4/3), 77 (-5/2)
WDL Ave 6 -- 78 (-3/4), 78 (-4/4), 78 (-3/3)
WDL Ave 7 -- 19 (-67/8) Admiralty MRT, 19 (-2/2), 16 (-3/0), 15 (-2/1) 2 pax on upper deck
** I feel the above routing analysis can give a good idea why 964 has got another DD. As observed by TIB429E, he is absolutely correct # pax on upper deck while leaving WRI and entering WRI were 03 and 02 respectively, BUT this is not where 964 prime loading comes
** The bus I took was at the edge of PM peak, more off-peak. Loading is poor between WRI and Admiralty and depends completely on other buses along the route. 964's loading is bi-directional and is from Admiralty to WDL Loop.
** Peak loading = 76 pax in WDL Loop direction, Peak Loading = 80 pax in WRI direction (but 60 pax boarded at Admiralty MRT and 67 alighted at Admiralty MRT)
** I want to highlight upper deck was quite well utilized between Admiralty and WDL Loop. To add to it, loading in both directions exceeded 70 pax (inspite of being not in prime peak).
** Now imagine the same slot that was done by BSEP MAN.. of course would not be able to accommodate all pax... Either LTA would have to add one more BSEP MAN (like it keeps doing on 269 and 315) or upgrade to DD... They did the smarter thing here... For 10 pax more... instead of adding one more bus... upgrading to DD makes so much more sense
** Hope this analysis is beneficial. Cheers!

Loading on sv 49 3368X @ 17.55 from Jurong West St 51 on Tues
32 pax already on board when bus arrived.
Jurong West st 51 -- 37 (0/5)
Lakeside MRT -- 87 (-26/76) wow...
Corporation Rd -- 86 (-3/2), 81 (-5/0)
Corporation Dr -- 76 (-8/3), 58 (-20/2)
Tah Ching Rd -- 39 (-19/0)
Yuan Ching Rd -- 31 (-11/3) I alighted here as I had to collect payment from client from his residence at Lakeside Apartments
** Out of 76 who boarded at Lakeside MRT, 31 at the best alighted along sv 98 route... around 45 still were for 246/154 stops... So 49 has come as an alternative for all these 3 services
** For PM, since people don't have to cross road, looks like they prefer 49 (especially if on checking bus app, bus seems to be arriving soon)
** Those for Yuan ching and Tah Ching road went to upper deck as hardly anyone alighted until Tah Ching from upper deck and had around 35 pax on upper deck.
Now... what luck... 1. I received my payment... 2. when i crossed road to take bus again 49 DD 3368X came with 21 pax on board
Yuan Ching Rd -- 31 (0/10)
Tah Ching Rd -- 38 (-1/8)
Corporation Dr -- 46 (-3/11), 51 (-2/7)
Corporation Rd -- 52 (-3/4)
Lakeside MRT -- 38 (-36/22)
JW St 51 -- 47 (0/9), 48 (-2/3)
JW Ave 1 -- 46 (-6/4) I alighted here!!
** Even on return leg... the loading on Corporation side was higher than JW town side..
969 better run with 20 DDs and 4 SDs(4 SDs to Amdep)..2 of the SDs can be deployed to 969A during Am peak hours to loop at Punggol Rd
858 deployed 20 A22s from Wldep and 6 OC500LEs from Amdep.Morning peak Amdep can downroute from Yishun MRT towards Airport(0515-0630)
Yishun svc like 851,854 & 855 need dual control as to deploy DDs..Only 853 single Amdep control.
171 can shortened to loop at BPJ and single Amdep control also

to dear busanal- how u count. i onboard 2. i board paya lebar and count ok til bedok. so many go down at bedok and go in. i lost count. i count 28 peop board chai chee. then bedok mrt i feel 40 go down and 40 go in. but not sure. how to count.
can coach?
to clarify - i ok count at reg stop. issue with stop like mrt where high volume go out and go in.
Unbelieveable to see svc 49 gets more than 85 pax!Usually i see only packed lower deck but a few on upper deck during peak hours
Originally posted by carbikebus:Unbelieveable to see svc 49 gets more than 85 pax!Usually i see only packed lower deck but a few on upper deck during peak hours
Yes. It is interesting. That's why I find loading patterns exciting. My understanding is 49 loading in PM to Taman Jurong is very high because
- people don't need to climb stairs and go to other side for 154/246. can take 49 directly from same side
- bus apps make it easy for commuters to check when next bus is arriving and can just wait few mins for 49 than cross overhead bridge (no escalators)
- If 98 has not called the stop, you will also have those for Corporation Dr taking 49
In AM... I haven't observed but I believe, people will prefer 240/246/254 instead of 49/98 from Taman Jurong to Lakeside.
49 ought to be extended

I know it can be challenging to keep accurate loading on stops where there is high alighting/boarding. I used to face this challenge quite a bit before. Here are a few tips what you could do:
Let's take for example sv 154 during AM peak towards Eunos. At Clementi MRT, you will typically have 35-40 pax alighting (from HDBs/condos along AYE), at the same time you will have some +50 pax boarding towards Ngee Ann.
This is what I do:
Take row 5 window of upper deck.
When the bus arrives to stop, I count the people who come close to door to board. Your concentration needs to be on people boarding at same time with one eye and your fingers you count pax alighting. Everytime 10 pax alight, deduct from those boarding.
Try doing it few times, you will find your own trick. I won't say it will be accurate, but it is still a good estimate +/- 5 pax.
I have validated this by then taking the count at King Albert and going to lower deck and verifying my count v/s those actually in bus. It has been pretty accurate 2-3 pax +/- but in overall scheme of things, it's not much! Let me know if this helps :)
The part that I have NOT BEEN able to master yet is loading calculation on bendy buses. Extremely tough.
