Its either DTL or the number of buses added during few months ago..
Originally posted by SMB128B:I think you read the wrong post. Better freq for 117, not 118. This is due to the inherent nature of pax pool in the North, where they look out for the more frequent buses to board. If 117 remain at its current freq it isnt gonna get optimistic loading in the North.
For 118, I was pushing for a spur seeing how majority of pax alight to head down to Sengkang South, and it will do them good to have a peak-period trip down without transferring.
I can understand your viewpoint, though I feel that 118 is mainly a Punggol West - TPE stop, and TPE stop to TP/CGH/CBP service. IIRC, that specific stop is emphatised based on the amount of options one can transfer towards.
Sengkang/Hougang/Buangkok - 27, 88, 89, 109
Punggol East/Central - 3, 34
Yishun/Sembawang/Woodlands - 39, 168, 858, 969
If there is another pair of stops across the other side of the flyover, one can transfer to 86 to access Sengkang West/Jln Kayu/Seletar/YCK.
If you do wish for a spur, I have a suggestion
Punggol Rd/SK East Way/SK Int
Reason being that:
Punggol Rd to Rivervale/Upp S'goon - 86, 136
SK East Way to Anchorvale/Fernvale - 50, 372
SK Int to Hougang Ave 3/5/Upp S'goon/Kovan - 80, 87
IMO, this might work, but loading might not prove viable for LTA to implement when current options can handle it. If pax alighting from 118 to transfer cannot board buses towards Sengkang/Hougang, then this might be viable as a M varient from CBP - SK

Hi mr ButIAmAToilet, if go to different interchanges, introduce new service. M variant will not work well as it is too confusing, especially for the older generation. Up until now, don't think they will introduce same number with a different letter for bus services going to different interchanges. If they make an exception, it will be very chaotic next time. Especially if they introduce services going to the town later after several months. Cheers. Thanks.

Yes yes new svc... New svc to where?! LTA definitely wont plan a new svc to Changi area from the northeast anymore...
Or why not like this. Intro new svc for Punggol, then amend 118 out of Punggol?

Hi mr SMB128B, after sengkang interchange completes expanding by Q3 2016, there will definitely be new services. If it is not going to Changi area, there will surely be other areas for new sengkang services.
There is no use to keep harping on sbs 118. The bus service has already been earmarked to be transferred to Go ahead group so no point thinking of amending sbs 118.
If you don't get a direct bus service to your required area, so be it. Many other people from Punggol are also going to sengkang to transfer to other bus services such as sbs 88 and 159. So vice versa. If sengkang residents are required to go to Punggol to transfer to sbs 117 and sbs 118, then no choice. Cheers. Thanks.

Definitely looks like demand dropped. Though you could have begun your journey earlier for more accurate observations.
Mon 04/Jan on sv 87 from Bedok Interchange to HCI
Time: 17.34, VO3x
Bedok Interchange -- 21
Bedok North Ave 1 -- 34 (0/13)
Bedok North Rd -- 36 (-5/7), 31 (-7/2)
Bedok Reservoir Rd -- 27 (-4/0) bunched with 87 B9TL ahead.
Kaki Bukit Ave 1 -- 23 (-9/5), 20 (-5/2)
Jalan Damai / Tengah -- 18 (-2/0), 21 (-4/7) separated from B9TL in front at the ave 1 traffic light
Kaki Bukit Ave 1 -- 30 (-1/10) headway with B9TL in front increased to 3 mins due to traffic turning right on Eunos Link
Eunos Link -- 39 (-2/11), 64 (-2/27 bef Airport rd), 73 (0/9), 81 (0/8)
HG Ave 3 -- 84 (-2/5), 84 (0/0), 81 (-6/3) bef Lor Ah Soo, 84 (-12/15), 82 (-2/0), 81 (-8/7)
Tampines Rd -- 83 (-9/11)
HG Ave 7 -- 77 (-7/1)
HG Ave 5 -- 72 (-11/6)
HCI -- 48 (-31/7)
* Super impressed with the loading. Back to back DD on 87 could get 80+ pax. Peak frequency is 3-5 mins at that time from Bedok Interchange
* The BC did a good job by deliberately driving slow along Kaki Bukit Ave 1 to pick up more pax and separate itself by traffic light with DD in front. This helped pick up more load.
* Buses in opposite direction empty from HCI to Eunos Link but from Eunos Link to Bedok got heavy loading. So can say that the service has good bi-directional loading
* Citaro on 87 spotted at Bedok North Road towards Bedok Interchange packed to door.
Loading observations on 116, 165, 324 at HCI, Mon 04/Jan from 18.15 to 19.30
116
6.18 - 25 pax
6.28 - 28 pax
6.38 - 44 pax
6.50 - 49 pax
7.01 - 65 pax
7.11 - 41 pax
7.22 - 32 pax
7.32 - 24 pax
* Loading seems to be highest between 6.30 to 7.15pm, peaking at around 7pm. Before and after buses leave with around 30 pax on board.
Loading observations on 116, 165, 324 at HCI, Mon 04/Jan from 18.15 to 19.30
165

6.51 - 52 pax (SD)
7.03 - 39 pax (SD) 8159A
7.17 - 33 pax
7.34 - 30 pax
* Similar observation like sv 116. Peak loading started dropping off already after 7pm. This is strange because I thought for Hougang Interchange peak hour would last until 7.30-8pm
* My understanding on why this may not be the case is because those at HG Ave 8 may prefer taking 147 (CCL+NEL+NEX). Travel time a little more but better frequency. Those working close by in Hougang area or transfer pax will already do this by 7pm as they would leave work bet 5-6.30pm (as this is not CBD).
* Frequency on 165 is at approx. 13-17 mins.
Loading observations on 116, 165, 324 at HCI, Mon 04/Jan from 18.15 to 19.30

6.45 - 29 pax
6.56 - 40 pax
7.06 - 37 pax
7.16 - 34 pax
7.25 - 29 pax
7.36 - 30 pax
* Peak for 324 starts a little later compared to 116/165 (around 15 mins later). Peak loading is stil around 7pm.
* All 102 buses departing with 15-25 pax on board, definitely there was potential of combining the two. At least they should merge the berths for 102/324 as they are at two ends. Waiting time in each queue is 10-11 mins, with merging waiting time can be reduced to 05 mins, unless those who want door-step service.
* Actual loadings reported for everyone to analyze. IMO, for 116 and 324 HCI (starting point) is the peak loading part of the route.

I agree with your point of the merging of two services into one berth. But then again, I believe the commuters who are exiting from Hougang MRT by the "hilltop" exit prefer to queue for 324 rather than walking to 102... just my opinion

yesterday evening at 540pm, 1xA22 (960) at Raffles town club bus stop with seating capacity as well, for which the few trips at this timing should be full in the past....

1840 hrs is too late IMO... 171's peak hour used to be like 5.45pm - 6.30pm from Marina Centre based on my observations at Bukit Timah and my guesses.
I'm planning to do loading analysis on a few services affected by DTL2 soon... 67, 171, 852 and 960 are in my plans. 66, 74, 151 and 174 in consideration. Any requests are welcomed.

Wednesday 6 Jan 2016, 1754 hrs
Arguably not the best time to observe 177. In fact, many of those working in MINDEF and nearby camps are already utilising the bus stops along UBT Rd, or turning to the DTL.

Casual observations at bus stop 44851 (Bt Panjang LRT station)
Wednesday 6 Jan 2015, 1823-2043 hrs
This stop is served by bus services 180, 920, 922, 970, 975, 979 and 983, and is the starting stop for all of them, except 180 and 983.
The observations on 970, 975 and 979 have a relatively lower margin of error. Observations on all bendys (primarily 180) are merely estimates and can be extremely inaccurate.
Asume all buses are MAN A22 rigids, unless otherwise stated.
When I arrived, there were already two girls taking down loading observations on printed tables, which looked hauntingly similar to the ones the duo (at Joo Koon on the morning of 18 Dec) were holding. One of the girls was wearing a secondary school orientation T-shirt. I didn't converse with them at all throughout, and they left at about 2030 hrs.
(Partially done, remaining sections will be posted tomorrow. Cos I'm really tired.)

It does seem that most of the passengers are long-distance travellers to Kranji / Woodlands Train Checkpoint, mostly boarding from KAP and Old Ford Factory. There is clearly little observed demand from the CBD up to Bt Panjang.
