120 should remain as it is IMO as most of its demand comes from Alexandra Road. It is the only route linking Mapletree business city to Redhill mrt and also complements 33 and 64 along Dawson where both of the services have bad frequency. For redhill close, there is no right turn from Jln Bukit Merah and the only way to enter redhill close is from bukit merah central. Honestly speaking, there is really no need for a service for Redhill Close as redhill mrt and Bukit merah bus int is within walking distance. Only the Jalan membina sector seems good as Jalan Bukit merah residents will have the option to take 120 to either redhill or tiong bahru mrt.

Perhaps they'll build a bigger, air-conditioned interchange on the other side of Eunos Rd 2?

Most former 173 links are well covered: Hillview - Clementi by 963, Hillview - Beauty World by 970, Bt Batok - Rail Mall by 178, and so on. Separating 173 allow the two sections to be more direct and more useful services (as compared to the current loopback that the route exhibits).
Hillview would be served by six trunks: 173, 176, 177, 963, 970, 987. Services to Bt Batok central are 176, 177, 987. Current 173A short-trip renumbered 987A.
Any comments on my previous suggestion to 173 / 987?
