My final suggestion of bus service.
For the people staying in Bukit Gombak and Jurong.
The future of Bukit Gombak will find this bus service useful because it connects them to many secondary schools in Jurong. :)

Hi mr jurongresident, SAFRA clubhouse is in Punggol. It is situated inside Punggol only accessible by sam kee LRT which is unopened yet. Cheers. Thanks.

There's a numbering clash with TPY feeders...
Those living at western Bt Gombak already have 187 to Jurong. Bt Batok has 157/187. Overall definitely enough services already. But if you insist, it would be better to reroute it to East / West Ave 5.
Also with DTL2 opening, consider an extension to Bt Panjang for roads without 180/187 link.

Originally posted by AJQZC:Let's consider some key points on the 171 route.
- (A) Yishun Int
- (B) Bt Panjang east
- (C) Bt Panjang west
- (D) Beauty World / Pei Hwa / KAP
- (E) Botanic Gardens
- (F) Stevens
- (G) Newton Circus
- (H) Orchard
- (I) Promenade / Marina Centre
- C-G directly follows DTL2, and has the most duplications. C-F follows 67 & 170, while G-I follows 700. However, C-B-F-H is more effectively served by 190, 700 and 972. Also, A-E-D is back-uped by 852.
- Most of the demand is between A-C/D. Some demand for D/E-H; depending on the Newton MRT transit area, this may or may not be transferred over to DTL.
===================================================
Consider the transport links without 171 (A-C is only served by 171, and must remain):
- From A: A-D is also served by 852, while A-G/H/I has alternative services 167, 851, 857 and 980, beside the MRT. A-E/F is unique, but demand is low and an MRT transfer from Newton is more efficient.
- From B: B-D has 184. B-E is a little difficult, but 700 can be amended there if need be.
- From C: Aside for A-C, no problems: 67, 170, DTL up to Newton, and the rest covered by 190, 700, 972.
- From D: No problems. E/F/G all covered by 66, 67, 170 and DTL. D-H also has 77 & 174, D-I also has 75 & 77.
- From E: Unique link to B and H/I.
- From F/G/H/I: Alternatives present to A/B/C/D. Only E-H/I is not directly served.
Thus, if rationalisation is desireable, a suitable cutting point would be near D or E, with additional links for E-B and E-H/I.
Bad suggestion. Path Light's suggestion for Service 171 is better

actually, my concern is about a particular secondary school in Bukit Gombak that is going to be rebuilt and their holding school is all the way in Jurong West. I know there's 187 at the north-west part of Bukit Gombak and 180 at the western fringe, but how about the southern part of Bukit Gombak, where 174 and 157 are not really accessible? That's why I suggested this bus service. Although this seems short-term, the long-term benefit is the bus connection to reputable schools, such as River Valley High School and Fuhua Secondary School. And also the bus connection to Jurong Point, which is like quite an extraordinary shopping centre. And Jurong Central Park, where once and while there are events. SAFRA Jurong is like the only SAFRA clubhouse in the West. While 187 already provides the connection, this bus service is shorter and faster. It's really going to enhance the bus connectivity in Bukit Gombak.
While southern Gombak does need more services, the pressing demand is for links to main roads outside Bt Batok, as well as DTL2. For other places, a transfer at Bt Batok central to Jurong West is still relatively convenient. Dunearn Sec already has 180 and 187 to Jurong West.
Also, your idea of necessiting this link from Bt Gombak to "reputable schools" doesn't quite make sense... the named schools are quite close to the MRT stations.

Actually I think it's enough to extend 990 to Bukit Panjang via your suggested route in Bukit Gombak. This way more residents in Bukit Gombak and Bukit Panjang are connected to IMM and Jurong East, yet they can still transfer along the way to Jurong West.

Extending 990 north is actually quite a good idea, making use of an existing service to enhance the links around Gombak.
My suggestion:

You don't need to change route between Yishun and BPJ as that's where it is unique... from Upp Bukit Timah onwards you get alternatives.
171 at best can change from Beauty World onwards, as you still may want to maintain direct link b/w Upp Bukit Timah and BPJ town. No other service except 963 from Hillview onwards.
Another way is 171 terminates or loops at Petir/BPJ ring road and 41 gets extended to loop at Petir/BPJ ring road as well... this way 41 can be made more useful and cover for missing link of 171 between Upper Bukit Timah and BPJ town.

Instead of just introducing another service to ply this road again (unless demand necessitates it), you could actually consider improving existing links between Jurong East and Bt Panjang, especially 160 and 178.
A while ago someone suggested splitting 178 up to manage it more efficiently. I thought having separate sections of 178 (Boon Lay - BBDEP) and 968 (Woodlands - Jurong East / Clementi) would be a good idea.
On 160, consider adding a variant that plys Bt Batok Rd to hasten the journey, seeing as 160 has terrible frequency. Such as this one:
Service 150: Jurong East Int - Dairy Farm Rd (Loop)
Alternatively, you can always fall back on a 160M looping at BPJ MRT, or an extended 990 to Bt Panjang (as per suggestions above).
Actually i feel that 67 may be diverted to ply Panjang but i think 67 may not be touched?

I think service 160 has the same fate as 170 of bad frequency. Maybe it is because of the traffic jam.. We wouldn't know. I not sure of the 150 suggested by you.
