I vaguely remembered (just today) that there was a Service 8 (not the current Tampines - Toa Payoh one) which plied from Bedok to Shenton Way. Think it used Leyland Atlanteans.

Yes, there was. Bedok to Marina Centre via Shenton Way. If I'm not wrong, it started off as a Bedok - Shenton Way bus. (via Guillemard Road and Nicoll Highway and subsequently Bedok South and ECP)
But towards the year of withdrawal, it was changed to Bedok - Marina Centre via Shenton Way, which by itself, is a bit on the funny side as it passes Marina Centre twice.
Need to check the bus guides to confirm this.... -

If SBST said that service 36 plies between Changi Airport and Marina Centre via Orchard, service 36 would pass "Marina Centre" twice. This was the case with former service 8. -

It's just naming convention, if the loop point was Shenton Way, then Marina Square would only be passed by once in each direction. -
