So when did the Jurong West Extension works started?
Works started in 1985. My area (Neighbourhood 9 / streets 91, 92, 93) was built first. The original entrance to NTI was via Upp Jurong Rd. The road was closed to make way for the housing estate and a new entrance was made via Jln Bahar. Sv. 174 was amended accordingly. The entrance archway was preserved and it can still be seen today. 2 years later, the first block of flats were completed and by 1988 (when I moved there) many units were already occupied.
Now, regarding the NTI terminal where 174 used to end. The original terminal was located at the end of Nanyang Ave. Now here's the confusing part. In 1984, Nanyang Ave starts from Upp Jurong Rd. In 1988, it starts from Jln Bahar! Confused? Here's the explanation. I compared 2 street directories from the mentioned years. The original road which led into NTI from Upp Jurong Rd was called Nanyang Ave and it culminated in a dead end right after Students Crescent. This was where the first terminal located. Nanyang Ave was partially closed due to the Jurong West Extension development. The remaining section, after Nanyang Cres, was renamed Nanyang Dr (Students Cres was also renamed Nanyang Dr). The old terminal was no more. In its place was Nanyang Terrace. A new road was built from Jln Bahar into NTI. This new road was also named Nanyang Ave! A new terminal was built near the junction of (the new) Nanyang Ave and Nanyang Dr.
