  Service 857 is faster if there is no jam on CTE.
  
  You may wish to take service 21 to Boon Keng Rd (near Boon Keng MRT), walk to Serangoon Rd and transfer to service 857.
  
  As for return journey, alight from service 857 at Bendemeer Rd (after Boon Keng Rd) and transfer to service 21.

  My suggestion (if budget isn't your constraint) :
  
  136 -> Edgefield Plains to Punggol Road (cross to opposite)
  161 -> Punggol Road to WRI
  187 -> WRI to Bukit Panjang Road
  180 -> Bukit Panjang Road to Chinese Garden MRT
  335 -> Chinese Garden MRT to Jurong West St 41

  Towards Aljunied, buses will call at an additional stop outside Kallang station. No change towards Tanjong Rhu. Route change is temporary.

  Take 184 from opposite Clementi MRT Station. Alight at Pending Road, opposite Pending station. Change to 963 to Woodlands. Trip approximately 45min to 1 hour, pertaining to waiting time.

  Sv 38 does wind in Simei.
  
  Perhaps you can transfer to Sv 38, 8 or 18 to Tampines Ave 2 and then transfer to Sv 12?

  Maybe. You should be able to take a Sv 8, 18 or 38 bus quite fast, maybe a few minutes, but the Sv 12 wait is not the shortest.
  
  But you have to consider that Sv 38 has high demand in Simei, as only two buses ply there (other one is Sv 9) so boarding activities would take quite long while Simei Rd, which Sv 12 plies, has quite low demand.

  No idea, but it should be comparable, as both buses frequency is quite good (Sv 24 especially) and it takes a more direct route (CCL route) than the MRT which winds through the city.
  
  You can also take Sv 22 which also brings you to Upp Paya Lebar Rd.

  Service 168 to Bedok interchange, walk to New Upp Changi Rd and transfer to service 24.
  
  Service 966 to Jln Eunos, walk to Sims Ave and transfer to service 24.
