Armed gang beat up man on busSHOCKED passengers froze in fear when a group of youths, wielding metal bars, knives and beer bottles, chased a young man onto a public bus on Saturday night.
The bus was stained with blood after the five-minute attack. -- LIANHE WANBAO
The man, in his 20s, had tried to escape on the bus, but found himself cornered when eight men boarded it and attacked him.
He is now warded at the National University Hospital, with cuts to his head, hands and back, said the police yesterday.
Two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, were arrested yesterday for their part in the riot, a police spokesman added.
The attack followed a dispute that took place at around 8pm in a coffee shop in Block 283, Bukit Batok East Avenue 3.
Two groups of young men, about 20 in all, exchanged blows, said the Chinese evening newspaper Lianhe Wanbao.
The paper said that one group had earlier gone to the crowded coffee shop to look for another group, and they had a row, which soon escalated into a fight. It is not known what the quarrel was about.
Witnesses reported one youth running to a bus stop 300m away, and boarding the stationary bus. But gang members went after him and pressed the bus emergency stop button to prevent it from leaving. No one else was hurt in the attack, which lasted about five minutes. The victim told Lianhe Wanbao that he was waiting for his bus with a friend when he looked at the group of rowdy youths.
Before he knew it, the group asked him what he was looking at.
He said he replied: 'Why can't I look?' and that provoked the attack.
i suppose tat's not a "bus emrgency stop button" but rather the emergency door cock button on the outside of the bus. pressing it opens the door, but at the same time enables the door-accelerator lock, preventing the bus from moving off until the door is properly closed again. thus, it appeared to most who do not know the real purpose of the button that this bus is used (solely) to stop the bus.
