Gaming Using IC number to Register

I notice that nowadays Online gaming require IC number to register.
How "safe" is it and what are the games that require this type of informations is there a local company in singapore to handle the registrations or you have to go online to register.
Do reply if you know how this go about and what are the game name. I notice some users are using other pple IC number without their knowledge. And this user couldn't care less or maybe nowadays our IC numbers are not Important anymore. 
When you are reading this, someone or some kids may be mis-using your IC number at this very moment. -

The game i am talking about is maple story.
For the rest of the online gaming that requires IC number and a small fee to play seems ok as mostly those who pay will give their personnal details almost correct.
As for Maple Story is still on beta and is free and require IC number, I dont see much security. The thing is if you enter a wrong format of IC number the program know and request to re-enter so a person can re-enter until they get it right. Some youngster can also acquire other ppl info from their type of jobs they are doing, thinking those ppl will not be playing such a game....
