errr, my chain rusting leh, is it ok to put WD40 on it huh, or need to buy those lubricants specially for chains one? or i use wd40 get rid of rust first then wash the chain then apply lubricant? kam xia kam xia

The "WD" in WD-40 means Water Dispersant.
Good to spray on parts that you want to prevent from rusting. However, WD-40 attracts dirt very easily. I use it on my radiator fins to prevent rusting but prefer to clean my chain using a rag soaked in kerosene(as most bike manuals state) and then oiling it with some motor oil or a chain lube.
Some bikers say it is not recommended to spray WD-40 on O-ring chains because it will eat into the rubber seals. Whether this is true or not, I do not know as there is some dichotomy to the tests conducted so far.
An alternative is to install the Scottoiler automatic chain lube system (http://www.scottoiler.com). -

Cleaning the chain is really a chore. Getting all sweaty n dirty.So does anybody noe of any easy way to clean the chain? How frequent should one clean/wax it? I'm a newbie in bikes (Just 6 months) but from what i know and gather from old bikers, opinions vary....
1) some prefer the wax lube as it is easyb and convinient altough it says they are non fling formula but u can see the effect on the rims..try clweaning it..it will be very sticky.
2)Some would user the grease sold in a small bucket like castrol or mobil (sold in some pumpo station) but u need to clean the chain with some kerosene or diesel to take away the old deposits..if u like gooi-gooi messy stuff this is for you
3)Chain lubricant (eg WD-40) these are not bad..they are a bit of both..but the rims are much easier to clean. I personally use Lithium Grease By The 500 Series (cost abt $8.00)@ pump station...they are one of the best lubes aroung..
By the way..don't use kerosene on ur chain..it will tend to eat the seal (O-Ring). I don't know why but i've seen it That's all hope it helps -

first put the bike on some support.
then take out the chain.
soak in petrol or diesel or kerosene to loosen all the tough dirt.
then after a while take tooth brush and brush the chain.
then leave it to hang dry.
then apply chain lube.
then put back the chain and tighten accordingly.
done.

Go to so much trouble when u can just lube the goddamn chain. Remember, its a metal subject to repeated cyclic loading known as material fatigue. There will come a time when it WILL snap no matter how u take care of it... Dun take it too seriously lah unless your chain is really worth that the effort. -

WD40 creates rust.
dun use it
wash chain ah.....
jack the real wheel up, use kerosense and a brush, and just brush. turn brush turn brush turn brush.
later use soap water wash the kerosene off, use water wash the soap off, let the water dry, then apply chain lube.
if you got no o-ring no need wait for water to dry.

but the downside is it gets dirty very easy..

take out your chain and detach one link from your chain, then send via courier service the block N4 materials engineering Material failure testing lab in NTU and look for Ricky Chua. from some of my friends..they say you should lube it around every 500-600km mileage. Keeps it conditioned

!) look at the sproket itself..if u see some "teethe" start to grt shaprper or bending (some sort like a hook),, it's high time to change
!!)when u have tighten your chain to the maximum (or nearly there),,that is also an indication.
