When an F1 car crashes, the pieces are "designed" to fly off, so are the parts of the tyre wall. Purpose is to dissipate the energy. The only piece that cannot be deformed in any way is the cockpit. If you noticed, Alonso and Webber's cockpits remained perfectly intact.

been a few races since Interlagos.
good to see a comeback from Ferarri although i support the Williams.
love of the sport i guess.
Michael Schumi's car caught fire on the pitlane yesterday in the A1 ring. Was worried of a disaster coz few days ago saw a video clip of an older F1 car burst into flames.
My favourite Montoya was leading til his engine burst. Sigh. Disappointedly i switched off the TV. -
This is the 2nd time Schumi is somehow involved with the refuelling rig fire...
the last time, he was in Benetton and the No.2 driver was lucky to escape without injury when the refuelling rig spurted fuel onto the engine resulting in a giant fireball.
Benetton was found to have their rig modified to be able to pump more fuel in a shorter time... I think Benetton was punished when the stewards found out after investigations.
