How safe is it to ride a motorbike on the road?

Guys....i'm intending to get myself a bike.but e problem is....that ppl keep telling me that riding a bike is dangerous.even my gf discourages me from buying a bike.cos she's worried that i may get into accidents.but i'm thinking...if i'm not going to get a bike,whats e point of getting e license in e 1st place rite? i'm not being rebellious or anything here.i just wish to know more abt the safety standards on e roads here in spore.
So...i wish to find out from u seasoned riders here.how safe is it to ride a bike on the roads? hm...is riding on expressways more dangerous than on normal roads? how often do u get into a accident? If possible,state if u are normally riding alone or with pillion rider.Thanks all in advance!

Hi, well i as you are just like any other ppl who is thinking of getting a bike license. Just wanna say drive car oso dangerous, ride bike oso dangerous, but 1 adv of bikes is that its much more convenient than cars, when you ride your bike out you will know why. Furthermore, if your age is bout 19-22, it is much more affordable. Most bikers have their own passion for riding even though we have to absorb sunlight and rain water. Most impt is in which you prefer. well, any form of transportation is dangerous ... car, even taking bus also is a risk ... so safety come first ... and conscious of wat you are doing

Dangerous or not depend on all road user themselves, when accident involved, it can be a rider or driver fault, when on road i believe most season rider or driver can see that some rider tends to ride faster than and near the car plus like to cut in and out even thou they know it will endanger their life, driver on the other hand tends to turn abrupt out of the sudden or changing lanes without signalling or signal at the last min. All above mentioned may result other road user not able to react in time.
so end of the day, it depend on the road user whether they can ride or drive consciously. -

Guess most riders have lah. I have encounter accidents b4. the most serious one is at a corner, i think i sway with a bit more strength then the bike skidded and i just tumbled on the road loh.Arm got a patch of scratches abd bike fairing got more patterns haha...be confident when riding but NOT over confidentOriginally posted by H-Profile:anyone of u here had a accident b4? be it small or serious injury.

U ride slow and safe most to most u kenna some scratches or mild injuries.
U ride damn fast and corner here and there, that kind u buang its either fatal or serious injuries. up to urself also.
So my advice, wanna ride for transport safely, get it if u wan. -

Riding bike can be dangerous and non dangerous... Must protect ownself.. dun weave in and out of cars, dun go too fast when cornering, dun rush when approaching traffic light.... must plan the journey, n follow road sign n arrows...and regarding other cars knock you, use ur mirrors/check blind spot to know their presence, den try not to be in their blind spot.. in short no reckless riding and practise defensive riding, will keep u alive...

In a car, it is metal wrapping the person, in a bike, it is person wrapping the metal.
In an accident, we usually see the car all smashed up but the person is quite ok.
In a bike accident, usually we see the person is all smashed up, but the bike is relatively ok... -

bike is going at least an 70km/h to 80km/h for slow riders (excluding those ahpek going at 40km/h on the shoulders) with tat speed... it will be quite hard to really see wat is behind.. by taking a glance every few sec is also not enuff.
after one word.. riding is dangerous... no matter how safe and caution u are.. the danger is still there... driving is not safe either.. -

I did have a rather bad accident, playing corner and landed at TTSH for 2days. My only advise to you, do not rush thru things, take your time to take your 2b..upon pass...slowly shop for bike, just dont rush. -
i agree with SingaporeTyrannosaur.. furthermore, even if a bike rider r very cautious on the road, they may still get into fatal accident becoz they cannot prevent other people especially those driving car from banging onto them.. heavy vehicle just need to give u a light bang and the whole bike will lost control liao.. so very dangerous... if u suey suey met those drunk or bo license driver then u die liao..

looking in the mirrors is more than just looking for cars behind you. it's also to look at what those fuc[/i]kers are doing. pilots have a term for this, it's called situation awareness. -

i understand tat u are a die hard motorbike fan... but no matter wat .. riding will always be consider dangerous unless theres onli motor bikes in singapore. u ride slow, u mount kerb...confirm injure unless u stunt man or wat...
for cars.. u drive slow... u mount kerb.. next thing is onli to see how bad ur car is damaged ( unlesss u si bei suay.. mount kerb den hit railing den tree trunk poke into car )
anyway... no matter driving or riding... theres stll danger in it, juz by looking at accident rate of motorbikes in singapore and u will noe..
also riding in singapore is not like driving an airplane.. not all will practise those kind of situation awareness thingy like u haf said..
if yes, the insurance for bike wont be tat scary liao... -

as i say.. juz be careful.. u prepare to get into it.. den prepare for anyting.. life is precious.. u only got one life..not ten or twenty...
try to look out as much as u can when u are riding.. alot of kayu drivers.... posing danger ah...
as u say ... no money get car... den wait till u are financially ready den get a car loh... in the mean time can take public transport.. anyway public transport is also getting more convient liao.
no offense to bikers here, im onces a biker too... i got no intention of spoiling ppl's mood in riding..but i got frens who got killed on the road... crippled.. lying in hospitals using computers to support their life... tatz it...
