That statement is about 2 decades old... I tend to regard it as myth nowadays...
I rode a Suzook from 91 to 94, never had any prob. Lots of my frens also ride Suzooks and never complained.
Gixxer 600 and 1000 are the best-selling sportbikes in UK in 2003 (source: What Bike? magazine, spring 2004). Surely the Britons wouldn't be so stupid to choose them if they're really problematic, would they?
Cycle World magazine named Gixxer 1000 and SV650 the best superbike and best standard bike in 2003, respectively. Certainly their judgement is not only based on sheer performance. Reliability has to be considered as well.
Gixxer 1000 won the International Bike of the Year honors - a polling of magazine editors from all over the world, 3 years in a row.
Performance-wise, for mere mortals like us, it won't make much difference whether you get R1, Gixxer 1000, CBR 1000, or ZX-10R. Only few people can squeeze the optimal performance of those bikes, and certainly not on Singapore roads. Most people will go for look, price, resell price, and brand affinity.
Among 4 Jap litre-class sportbikes, I'd say R1 is the best looker. Suzuki manages to make their Gixxer uglier every year.
