Giant Beach Rat?

Sorry about the image title, it's just fun although the image is real and taken by a good friend whilst on holiday in the carribean.
She spotted this pitiful looking creature on a beach on a remote island not known for its tourism. The animal was approached and hissed its dissaproval at being approached. It was about the size of a cat, perhaps a little larger but not much. Look at the tail, very long for anything cat or dog in descendance. It had no fur, large teeth with prominent fangs and had a strange walk which she describes as lizard like.
Research has led us nowhere, what the hell is it. The locals on the island leave it to itself. There's only one of it and the locals believe it lives under the beach, in tunnels. One things for sure, it was sat on the beach, hissing, one minute and gone the next. The girl who took the pic turned her back 'for 30 seconds, no more' and it vanished.
Enjoy!
