Chicken-hearted like me cannot take the ghost house trail at the start. Was huddling at the back all the way. Gov. Bob Taft may not have cared for them, but other Ohio State Fair visitors say bugs taste all right.
Fairgoers can sample cheesy beetle larvae, chocolate-covered crickets and mealworms, provided by Bugman Educational Entoprises of Columbus.
Michael Messier crunched on some beetle larvae on opening day Friday. He liked the chocolate ones, so he moved on to cheese flavor.
‘‘They’re really not bad,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s like a Cheeto, only they’re a little more compact.’’
BugmanÂ’s main venture is educational programs about bugs, but company Mark Berman also offers a chance to take a bite.
Heather Lantz of Delaware County eventually persuaded her 11-year-old daughter, Marissa, to try a cheese-flavored larva by agreeing to split one with her.
Afterward, Marissa stuck out her tongue in disgust and reached for her motherÂ’s water bottle.
‘‘You could never be on ’Survivor,’’’ her mother teased, referring to the TV wilderness competition.
