for trade with same or higher value, the item must be unlocked.
however, certain items (like prawns, potato, onion, etc) in demand can be exchange for a higher value item through the locked system. Like if u need lobster (5*) and u have prawn, (3*) u can offer the guy potato for his lobster and he will most likely accept.
