I'm not sure if i can say what the "S" and "G" prefixes are used for, but once you get into the organization, you should be able to tell. And all this is for the Army context, airforce and navy may or may not organise themselves according to those numbers.
Ponders
G is meant for Divisional level and above.
S is for below Divisional level.
this is actually being practised by alot of armies around the world. except that different armies assign different numbers for different section.
but most follow what singapore does as singapore follow what us do. ahha
NeonTetra
each of the Gs are under the charge of an Assistant Chief of General Staff (ACGS)
eg. G1-army is under ACGS(Pers) and so on
Gordonator
G1 Army Manpower.
G5 Army ADF.

NeonTetra: That is incorrect. G1-G4 is under the command of the Div HQ or Div Comd because they are your Div PSOs. ACGS (Pers, Intel, etc....) are under COA himself. ACGS stands for Assist. Chief of General Staff btw, and your ACGSs have a unit working for them, generally known as depts rather than units. mods: i haven't said too much by mentioning this now have i?
Wuming: Gordonator is correct.... if you're still currently in the organization, go ask around and find out the history of ADF and you will know why.
