Talking about POI and Changi Airport.... one early morning in July this year, I was catching a very early morning flight 0540 hrs back to London (don't ask me why this time of the day and which carrier ... definitely not SQ ... it's a c--k -up by my "ang-moh" secretary !). Anyway, I was at terminal 1 and there was a bunch of what I presume to be reservists (judging from their hair style and rather mature look) guarding the drop-off point for taxis. Is this a PDF job nowadays?
Must be one of the boring jobs for a reservist. Anyone has a comment? -

i like the time when we were deployed at an offshore island south of sentosa. and during that period, got ZoutOut at the beach.. wa.... approx 5km away from the beach still can hear music from ZoukOut siah.
everyday sit in that sandbag watchtower for 12 hrs looking at the sea and sentosa.. hehehe... quite interesting. hahahahaah
anyone been there recently? coz' i would like to ask if anyone saw the drawings on the sandbag and if its still there. even the PDF CO who came visit said very nicely drawn. hahaha

SAF runs security drill for standby unit

WITH the holiday season in full swing, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) remains on the alert for possible terrorist threats in the run-up to the New Year.
The SAF activated its standby force of army soldiers yesterday morning in a homeland security readiness exercise on Jurong Island.
Though it was only an exercise, live ammunition was issued to standby force soldiers 'to deal with any possible incidents', said a Ministry of Defence statement.
The army has a 'standby force' of soldiers armed and ready to move into battle 24 hours a day, every day.
During the exercise, standby force personnel provided reinforcement to soldiers from the Sixth Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment (6 SIR) - the SAF's first 'protection of installations' battalion.
The additional firepower was evident from the heavy presence of troops around the island as armed soldiers went on vehicle patrols and prowled the fenced borders of petrochemical and chemical plants on the island.
Such drills are often held to test the army's vigilance and operational readiness to deal with homeland security situations, said Mindef.
Major Kong Kam Yean, 6 SIR's commanding officer, said: 'In today's climate, the army places a lot of emphasis on homeland security threats.'
The exercise allowed for better planning and interaction in deploying the additional force to beef up security on Jurong Island, he added.
In yesterday's readiness exercise, troops simulated protection of industrial facilities on Jurong Island against possible attack by saboteurs.
Mindef said soldiers were responding to a scenario where a 'terrorist group' was planning to make a 'forced entry to blow up an unspecified chemical plant'.
It added that increasing patrols and surveillance at key installations would help 'deter and prevent' terrorist groups from 'carrying out their intended tasks'.

ya, me definately going PDF later for reservist. really wish they will send me for those PDF commander course soon, if not then it's rifleman liao...

Our Army has taken a decisive step forward in its transformation journey. To create better mission responsiveness and a high-readiness core, the 6th Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (6 SIR) was designated to be the first Protection of Installations (POI) battalion, vigilant round the clock. A new chapter in 6 SIRÂ’s history began as the unit held its turn-operational parade at Maju Camp on 19 November.
At the parade, Chief of Army, MG Desmond Kuek and many senior commanders witnessed as Commander of 2nd PeopleÂ’s Defence Force, BG Tay Swee Yee, declared 6 SIR operational. The soldiers of 6 SIR also put up an impression display of their operational proficiency acquired after months of specialised training.
6 SIR will work round the clock and enhance security at four key civilian installations – Changi Airport, Jurong Island, Sembawang Wharf and Exxon-Mobil. The men, rigorously trained in rules of engagement, will have the capability to deal with higher security threats when needed.
Commander of 6 SIR, MAJ Kong Kam Yean, said, “This will be a new challenge for the battalion. We do not have guiding posts to look for, our enemies will always have new tactics. We must learn to leap ahead, and be able to fight tomorrow’s war with tomorrow’s strategy and tomorrow’s tactics. That is what we are trained to do, and Singaporeans can now be more assured knowing there is a dedicated force that can carry out its mission of protecting installations well.”

At least you can see civilization. Imagine the fates of the "non-portfolio" signallers of old who, when not laying or collecting telejay lines, get to do solo sentry - for hours on end - at the remote entrances of the Live Firing Area ~lol~ They were exposed to the elements too, & without company to pass the time away ... -

The thought crossed my mind then that it could be less boring than other POI duties. Definitely less dirty and you can eat hawker food nearby when off-duty.
