This just in: Channelnewsasia TV is reporting a fatality involving one of the Land Rover convoy vehicles ferrying supplies up to Thailand. The accident apparently occurred along the Malaysian highway near Alor Star.
While this isn't war or a parallel of the New York firemen climbing up the stairs of the WTC Towers, our volunteers (military & non-military) nonetheless are putting their lives on the line during their humanitarian mission.
May I suggest closing ranks & wholehearted moral support for all those going over. Frankly, this isn't the appropriate avenue to KPKB about "sai kang" & stuff. -

Land Rover Club member on way to Krabi dies in accident
SINGAPORE : The Land Rover Club, on the way to Krabi in Thailand to help victims of the tsunami disaster, suffered a loss themselves.
On Saturday morning, a member of the 30-car convoy lost control of his vehicle, crashed and died.
The accident happened along Malaysia's North-South Highway, near Alor Star.
The convoy was just 60 kilometres from the Thai border.
Fong Peng Khoon, who would have turned 46 on Monday, died after he apparently lost control of his vehicle along the highway.
Fong's sister told Channel NewsAsia that her brother is a divorcee with a 10-year-old son.
A member of the Land Rover Club who was travelling with the convoy, arrived at the scene some 2 to 3 minutes after the accident.
Indi Tulsi, Land Rover Club, said, "When I arrived there, Fong was already taken out of the vehicle. There were some professional nurses there who were trying to resuscitate him. And they did a very good job and he was starting to breathe on his own again. By then the ambulance arrived and they took him to Sungei Petani Hospital. But I understand he collapsed again on the journey.
"In the morning we started our journey at about 7.30 and the tragedy struck at about 8-8.15. We were just half an hour into our journey and this is not because of fatigue or anything like that." - CNA

The LST that left yesterday afternoon is halfway there. They will reach the vicinity of Meulaboh around mid-day tomorrow. Once they have anchored, they will begin to unload the engineer equipment, the 2nd medical team and the relief supplies and bring them ashore. read more here:

Wif regards to sending SAF forces for peacekeeping, like what is mentioned above I think it's something more meaningful than the normal wayang that we have to do day in day out.. i'd have volunteered to go if i was in the army.. even though moving dead bodies around might be a grisly task, soldiers and medics esp should get used to seeing this kind of stuff...
With all the terrorists nowadays.. have to step up readiness a bit.. (touch wood) -

I think its good that SAF is sending troops to help out in the disaster. But the thing i don't like is that why the government reports that it costs $20 mil just to send them for a 2 weeks period after people question the government on the lack of support to the disaster strucked countries. I mean if you want to help others, just help
, theres no need to advertise how much you spend. trying to show others how "much" they are contributing?

The figure mentioned wasn't all that impressive to me, cuz I figure we must've spent just as much when we deployed a LST ship to Iraq. Just take it in your stride, lah.

Apologies for the poor resolution, & the fact that the right side of the pix has been cropped out - so I'm not sure whether it captured how extensively inland the killer waves swept into (aside from the earthquake devastation). It's supposedly inaccessible by road, with some 10,000 of its inhabitants dead (something like 90% of the population wiped out).
What's $20m compared to this level of carnage? -
UPDATE ON SAF RELIEF OPERATION (03 JAN 05)
In the second phase of SingaporeÂ’s relief assistance to Indonesia, the SAF today deployed four more heavy-lift Chinook helicopters. We will also be deploying a second Helicopter Landing Ship, RSS Persistence, tomorrow. The SAFÂ’s relief operations in Indonesia are now focused on establishing a field hospital in Meulaboh by the second SAF medical team and the disembarkation of engineer equipment from RSS Endurance.
