would like to highlight one issue regarding wearing of jungle hats while in camp/exercise.
Please limit it to those who are 'authorised' to wear it. Used to be a symbol of elite forces, but now even storeman wears it...
as far as i know ppl who are eligible are either
- JCC trained
- Cdo
- Recce, Scouts
- Snipers
- Rangers
for they went through lots of shit for the hat. so give them some respect. -

head dress... i long time did not wear helmet liao not need to wear for my NS even better than CDO, CDO still need to bring along and wear it during fire fight.
it happen during the 1st in-camp when air tasking, standing order say all must wear helmet on board
i tell all my man not to bring the helmet out and they got no choice.
we go for heli "joy ride" without helmet and from than on no more helmet for us. to us it additional weight which we will will rather have in ex-change for rations.
it a privilege the elite ask for and the recognition they give.
well the LRRP do not wear helmet when go board the copper as well

My whole unit (Guards) used to wear jungle hats in Brunei during exercise, a long, long time ago. I think was our CO's orders and many continue to wear it after that. Every man bought jungle hats from a massed order. I have the impression back then that we were the first to do so. Is it official that the jungle hats are authorised only for the vocations stated? Except for scouts/snipers - all the above have their own forms of elite symbols, other than jungle hats.
On a sidenote - I always wonder whats in JCC? I come from a time before there was such a course, and my unit spent 6 weeks in Brunei. -

What I really can't stand is that really slacked off REMFs (Rear Echelon Mother F.uckers) even get to wear it when all they do is just sit around the rear.
The jungle hat to those who are authorised to wear are akin to the different beret colours of different units.
Based on your argument, for example, is it justified for any tom dick and harry who is not CDO trained to wear the red beret? Just like a CDO who is not in an armour unit cannot wear the black beret.
For the recce trooper, there is no official badge which is given to them in recognition of their training and operational status, and hence to them, the jungle hat is considered as their symbol of their status. -

don't think that there's an official standing order on who can/cannot wear them... but it used to be quite rare seeing ppl in jungle hats compared to nowadays -

i'm a scout and i wear jungle hat. but i'm also used to seeing normal riflemen in my unit wearing them...
nvm lah, if they like it let them wear lor. afterall jungle hats are much more comfortable than helmets mah. chin chai lah, good things must share share mah... -
You can't really compare a beret to a jungle hat. Berets are specific to each formation whereas jungle hats are the same across the entire SAF. People wear jungle hats out of comfort, not to hao lian or anything.

my csm and rsm told me that jungle hats were supposed to be worn by recce trained personnel only, not even for JCC trained people like me.
anyway not sure if you all are refering to the SAF issued jungle hat (the so-called condom hat) or the one that recce personnel wears (the nicer, more shape one).
i guess its up to the unit and how strict it is with such things. not sure if there is written regulations with regard to jungle hats - my guess is no. but anyway i still wont usually wear it, out of respect for the recce trained. -
