It should be the current Chief Of Armour..BG..(forgot his name..)Originally posted by LazerLordz:Could be..But go and make a guess on the next COA..He might not be who you guys expect, IMHO.
hmmm.. as in he's always the one giving the talks?Originally posted by CKtalon:It should be the current Chief Of Armour..BG..(forgot his name..)
I'm quite sure of it since the from all the SAFOS talks I've been to, it has been quite obvious it will be him..
Chief Armour Officer is BG Bernard Tan, a 1985 president and SAFOS Scholar. After returning from studies, he was a PC holding CPT rank in 46SAR back in the early 90s. He was made CO of 40SAR during the 1995 intake. He did a RECON 2B for the unit's first ATEC. MAJ Wong Ann Chai, his successor also another scholar did well to scored RECON 1 for unit's second ATEC.Originally posted by cornyfish2000:hmmm.. as in he's always the one giving the talks?
Wonder if it'll ever be possible again to have a non-SAFOS CDF or service chief, or for that matter, a non-SAFOS BG after all the current old guard BGs retire.
Bernard Tan? He was in charge of public affairs for MINDEF for quite a long while wasn't he?Originally posted by flash9933:Chief Armour Officer is BG Bernard Tan, a 1985 president and SAFOS Scholar. He was made CAO when MG Desmond Kwek became COA. While BG Ong Boon Hwee already retired, he might be the most prominent one to take over COA position.
Well I feel they are up to the mark in terms of policy making (in the SAF) and tactics wise..About them being able to lead a war maybe another question..since SAF ain't tried and tested anyway..Originally posted by cornyfish2000:I certainly hope these SAFOS scholars are up to the job..
After all, the main selection criteria is still academic results. Does having 3 S-paper distinctions make one a better officer than another with less than stellar academic results?
Look at it another way, does a relative lack of educational qualifications make one unsuitable to hold top positions in the army? That's obviously the thinking now, that's why we have the career schemes A, B and C, for the scholars, non-scholar graduates and the non-graduates respectively.
That's also why we'll never see a non-SAFOS become a service chief, no matter how well his military performance has been.
Well, the management would already have identified the people they want based on the academic results (and to a certain extent, ECA) even before these people step out of BMTC.Originally posted by CKtalon:These SAFOS scholars had to show they were one of the best cadets during their 10+ weeks in OCS before they would be awarded the SAFOS scholarship..
And there's extra exercises to assess these scholars-to-be..Basically stressing them out mentally and physically to see if they really can make it or just wayang-ers..
Pray tell who's your BMT mate?Originally posted by cornyfish2000:Well, the management would already have identified the people they want based on the academic results (and to a certain extent, ECA) even before these people step out of BMTC.
That's why we have Delta wing where they put all the peeps they want.. and that's why u hardly (if ever) see any SAFOS who wasn't from Delta. Cos basically, your fate is sealed even before u step into OCS.
As for the 'extra' assessment in OCS, it's really just to weed out the few who are really incapable of command and control, rather than to select the best to receive the scolarship lor.. I had an ex-BMT platoon mate who got SAFOS even though he only got a B average for his ST1. So much for being the best..
In our army, paper qualifications are still everything (well, almost).
Uh, that wouldn't be very nice would it?Originally posted by LazerLordz:Pray tell who's your BMT mate?![]()
