Just to let you know, I had been to ROC couple of times. As a NSF, NSmen and as a Tourist. I had met many Taiwanese and have befriend with many of them. We are still in contact, email each other, visit each other during hoildays etc etc and I do find out something about them. Actually, all of this was in the newspapers as well. Even before this, in the mid 80s', when the catholic pope and the Israeli president visited Singapore, there were large protests, and calls for war from some sectors of Malaysia, the SAF was on standby. -

life back then is different. a CPL is a section commander, a 3SG is a platoon sergeant. from this know already how hard it is to get CPL, even harder to get 3SG.

Were there any NSF sergeants back then?
I had the idea that back then, all sergeants were platoon sergeants and they're all regulars. That's why they had so many ranks for promotion of NSFs who weren't officers - PTE, PFC, LCP, CPL, CPL (First Class)... -
back then, a poly graduate is considered very powerful liao. sure can become commander.

Many S'poreans expressed their thoughts through the media and SAF was on the high alert and on the eve of national day, there is a big mobilsation and it is the first time a open mobilsations had activated on public holidays and eve instead of the usual weekends.
After than Indonesia and M'sia claimed that S'pore is being over-sensitive.
Anyway, SAF did have joint exercises with MAF and TNI with 'Malapura' (Navy) and 'Indopura' (Army and RSAF) -

Reading the messages about fucked up sergeants reminded me of my NS days....
I hated the army because since BMT, my NCOs were all only interested in acting tough, yaya, showing power, tekaning recruits....I felt they were not interested in training us at all.
Later in my unit, when we went to Taiwan, there was this CPT who was in charge of my platoon. On the first day, he was damned on the ball.....told us that to set up tents, etc we had to be in full No. 4 and SBO. Then after a while, he felt damned hot and was sweating....and he was the first one to take off his No. 4 top.
The top prize goes to my unit CO. When we went to Taiwan for exercise, he brought along a white pillow (the standard SAF issue for bunks) to sleep in the field. Somemore he overslept once and missed the Div level exercise (ops) briefing and got scolded like hell.
Then this stupid CO....so fat.....he tried to go to slimming centres, but to no avail. And when he moved house, he was too cheapskate to get a civilian moving company. So he got the MT line to do it, using army 3-tonners - and paid them a few bucks each and their meals for the day (it was on a weekend). Then they all got caught by MP. hahaha. The CO was on PS (pensionable service), but he was finally told to leave early. -

Tekong actually is quite nice nowadays liow....got stadium, etc. Like hotel. Even the bunks have lifts!!
I was in Tekong in 1985 (Camp 1)....and we only had single level wooden bunks. It was very primitive, really depressing. -

The lift is only for specialists n officers' conviences
Recruits are not allowed to use the lifts -

I remember during my NS days, I was in Khatib Camp. That camp is surrounded by a high fence with no plants on it....so the fence is totally clean and see-through.
I was on duty one weekend. In confinement was an AWOLee who was going to be charged (so he had to be confined on the weekend).
Somehow, he managed to escape from confinement and tried to climb the fence to escape from camp. He was caught by the DO (duty officer) and when he came down, the DO asked him "what are you doing?". He replied "catching fighting spiders, Sir!". Remember, it was a plain fence, without any creepers or plants.
