Secondly , i would like you answer your queries.
Do you know what is budget surplus or budget deficit ?
Whenever there is a budget surplus , it will go under our national reserves
(If im wrong, do correct me)
To get a surplus , the revenue must not be more then the expenditure and vice versa for the deficit.
Revenue can come from mostly taxes like GST,income tax,fines..etc..too many to name.
Expenditure can be defense spending, health care etc.
Singapore has national reserves specially kept for a purpose ,even before taking into account how much the Gulf War has cost Kuwait , to fund the coalition forces.
The total defense concept aspects of Psychological , Economical , Social , Civil Defense .
Don't be too cocky with the three month stint NS , History have proven that even if you all can mobilise all the army troops you all want..
Even if outnumbered , we can still win.

Singaporeans are also learning from him , we don't put our investments all into Singapore.
We invest into China/India and USA , into the up and coming economic powerhouses , because our leaders have foresight. -
balance of payments deficit on the current account: exports more than imports.
balance of payments surplus on the current acct: imports more than exports.
therefore if you want a surplus, control inflation cause with inflation comes increased demand for imports. control exchange rates. make your products competitive overseas etc.

talking abt national reserves, i ever heard from my lecturer tt singapore's national reserves far exceds from ani other country from SEA...but not sure abt the figures -

Technically speaking, USA is a bankrupt country.
However ,She can surely fight against China, but i guess when She moves on to protect taiwan in the event of an invasion , the effects of her 7.7 trillion debt will call on the President to give up.

Here's my question might be a little off-topic, How would the situation be like among the civilian population in Singapore once the fighting reaches our shores or even before? Your average Singaporean isn't even prepared for a minor incident let alone a full scale war. If the war is a long one we will be in deep trouble.
If there is a long term conflict, food supplies would run low once the ships stop coming, the government may have set aside a certain amount of food just in case the brown stuff hits the fan but how long can the supplies last. Soon after the supplies run out, you'll have people fighting over food and I doubt your local NTUC would still be stocking up food by then
and I think they would run out of stocks once war is declared. Like the rush to buy masks during the SARS period.
Why would people fight over food? Why should your child eat while mine starve.
Would there still be Law and Order on the streets even with panic among the population? Once law and order breaks down the situation may go from bad to sh1t
. Looting?
I'm confident in the SAF, what I'm not so sure about is the local population.

i understand what is said about the peace time spying and intelligence gathering but i sometimes wonder to myself that is it possible for our opponents to amass at our borders (within striking range of infantry) without us knowing. you know like a sneak attack. i assume that jets can attack us at any moment with short notice but you would still need the infantry to take the ground. they can't possibly air drop the entire invasion force right?
maybe they can all change into civilian and harbour first on their own side?? -
singapore is actually within the range of any nuclear missile launch from north korea. infact, these missile can reach as far as the northern part of australia.
we may deter any land, sea, air assault. but we are totally vulnerable to any warheads flying towards us. -

Massing at the borders... I think the enemy can only achieve this to a certain degree only. For example by only a few thousand troops (not more). They can use the peak hours at the Causeway , as example, to mask troops movements. But beyond this number, it is difficult. Any armed forces has a variety of intelligence gathering sources which feed info and also corroborate info. It is difficult to mask troop movements , beyond a few battalions size. You may be able to launch a limited surprise strike but may not be able to sustain the attack. So what is the objective? As the enemy, you only stir up some trouble but to what gain?
