The 2 guards outside istana

hmmmm, i have been wondering,
the two guard standing outside the istana wearing number 1,
1) how are they selected?
2) which unit r they from?
3) do they serve ns like that the whole 2 yrs?
4) are only cpl and below selected?
5) ain't they bored?
6) in case of intruders, are they suppose to move?
7) are there night shift guard standing there?
.....
so much questions

all i know is that they are MPs from the Provost, min height 1.75, no bow legs and some other asethetics requirements.
they "cannot move" compared to the police cos they are considered ceremonial guards. Compared to the ceremonial guards in other countries, our MPs move and fidget alot...... -

can answer some of the questions.
2)They are from SAF Provost Unit (SAFPU)
3)There is a change of command every first sunday of the Month.
5)No choice. That's their job
6)Of course they move. But I doubt there will be any intruders.

anyway my sense is the guard is more ceremonial, rather than an actual guard. he wont be very effective as a guard in no. 1, without extra magazines (assuming there is something in his magazine in the first place), no bayonet, etc... -

some british paper ran a story about a month back. in it, the published some photograps of a Soldier doing guard duty at Buckingham Palace fidgeting, scratching his itchy nose with his bayonet, and even falling asleep!

Heh, i'm sure they have a few live rounds in their mags lar... doing sentry duty with an empty magazine sounds... wierd.

I dun think they have rounds. Anyway even if they have, i think according to ROE, they have no authority to discharge rounds in a public area (can anyone confirm this?). Not very practical to defend a place in a number 1 either. What if the number 1 get creased or stained -

They are ceremonial guards. Each tour of duty is two hours. A sergeant will march out with the replacement guards every two hours... And every first Sunday of the month there will be a Changing of Guards, where the whole contingent will be rotated out.
All of these are largely ceremonial... Have yet to find out if they actually stay in or it is really the same contingent doing duties for the entire month... Haha. -
