SAFOS = CDFOriginally posted by NaZtAzi0:hmmm.. happen to came by this term SAFOS .. anyone care to explain whats SAFOS?![]()
got...some senior officers would go for safos to be given further enhancement in their career track....Originally posted by CKtalon:It's not offered to officers but officer cadets actually..
I doubt there are any commissioned officers who go for SAFOS..(most of the time it's SMS(again both for OCTs, Officers))
senior officers? They may get a sponsership to further their studies(get an MBA or seomthing) but that's not considered SAFOS..(Anyway those who can get such sponserships would most probably have been SAFOS/SMS scholars or 1st/2nd upper class honours pple..)Originally posted by Rockhound:got...some senior officers would go for safos to be given further enhancement in their career track....
its a case of 'would be useful if u went thru it' kinda thing..

SAFOS has always been awarded to 19 year old OCTs..not senior officers
Yeah, u're absolutely right. Anyway all SAFOS will still be in OCS when they receive their scholarship and commission as 2LTs. At that point in time, they are only halfway thru their OCC, so they commission without having to serve out their Pro Term. Same situation for the SMS scholars.Originally posted by kaka_22:Hey issit true that if one is awarded SAFOS n he is still in OCS, he will straight away be comm as an officer and he will go for the nearest intake of his chosen uni.
The only downside is operational experience lacking through rapid rotation through the force. Can "scholarly brains" ever alleviate the lack of operational experience and long term immersion in one's role?Originally posted by CKtalon:Well upon being conferred the scholarship, they are still are 3 bar cadet till they leave for their 4 years of studies..
Upon leaving Singapore, they are commissioned as 2LTs..
One year into their studies, they are promoted to LTA..
They will be promoted within a year upon returning from their studies..
So they are guranteed the rank of CPT..(age 24)
Of course, from there on, it's up to their own performance to climb ASAP
Most become MAJ by 26..and then it really depends from there how fast they are promoted up the ranks
Not necessarily 3 bars.. sometimes they are commissioned even before they receive their 3rd bar.Originally posted by CKtalon:Well upon being conferred the scholarship, they are still are 3 bar cadet till they leave for their 4 years of studies..
Not only of the army, but also of the country. Dun forget they automatically become Administrative Service Officers too. Our future Prime Ministers are probably going to be SAFOS scholars too.. so are the key ministers in the Cabinet (Defence, Foreign Affairs etc). Not forgetting the permanent secretaries of the various ministries as well as the heads of the various GLCs.Originally posted by Cens:The "elites" of the army
1984 SAFOS cum President's Scholar.Originally posted by kaka_22:BG Bernard if im not wrong is also a SAFOS holder, in recent Straits Times news they tip him to be in politics within the next few yrs....(Guess its a tradition for SAFOS holders)
Well, you could always swing it the other way and say our military is increasingly run by civilians..Look at their ROA and you will know why they study certain subjects which are totally non-military in nature.Originally posted by cornyfish2000:1984 SAFOS cum President's Scholar.
Heh, in a sense, Singapore is being ruled by the military and increasingly so. We seem to be moving towards that while other developing countries are trying to move towards a civilian administration.
Hmmm a little off-topic : Indo Pesident SBY is a 4 star Genaral rite?thats wat i heard.....Originally posted by cornyfish2000:1984 SAFOS cum President's Scholar.
