Trainee TeachersÂ’ Army Experience
On 11 and 12 May, 1600 trainee teachers from the National Institute of Education (NIE) visited Nee Soon Camp. Organised as part of MINDEFÂ’s and NIEÂ’s National Education (NE) programme, the visit aims to help the trainee teachers understand NS and better engage their students in NE.

As the SAF NE Facilitator, COL Chiang Hock Tew briefed the trainee teachers, explaining that strong defence capabilities are needed to protect Singapore’s sovereignty. He said, “National Service (NS) plays an integral role in our defence. It is important for our future teachers to understand this so they can impart the correct values to our youngsters.”
The trainee teachers were treated to impressive displays of Our ArmyÂ’s defensive capabilities and given insights into NS. The main highlight of the visit was the Army Studio, which consisted of booths set up by the Formations showcasing the high-tech hardware of Our Army. There was also much interaction between the visitors and our soldiers as they mingled and exchanged views.
The visitors also rode on the BRONCO and five tonner trucks, from which they observed the Light Strike Vehicle, SM1 and Bionix in action. The mobility, speed and power of these vehicles did not fail to impress. Mr Wan Rizal said, “I had never been this close to the vehicles before. It was awesome.”
For some, the chance to fire SAR21 live rounds at the 100m range was the highlight of the visit. Ms Wong Kui Fong, who handled a rifle for the first time, said,” I was really nervous but it turned out to be easier than I thought, as I could use the scope on the SAR21 to aim.”

The trainee teachers also tried out Our Army’s combat rations. Mr Sean Teng remarked, “I don’t remember our rations being this good. Our Army’s food has really improved!”
He added, “This visit is truly interesting and it helps us appreciate what the SAF is doing. We understand the importance of defence more as well. We will now be able to impart this knowledge to the students in the future.”
