YEs, it is an SOP...For Xing Guang, we were actually tested 3 or 6 months (sorry, can't remember exactly) after we came back...Originally posted by Evangelion84:After coming back from Ex. Lancer, Brunei, we have a blood test in the medical center.
Anybody have such an experience?
Is the blood test a standard S.O.P after overseas training?
What is it about?
actually b4 going overseas the unit suppose to ask the MO over to give a talk on STD also unit suppose to indent condoms for men as well. After the return from overseas, 3 months later the unit suppose to arrange the men to have a blood test for aids.Originally posted by Evangelion84:Yah.
If im not wrong, we are not tested immediately too. I think also wait for 1-2 month like dat.
Any medics or pple from school of military medicine wishes to clarify?
They scare we come back wif diseases?![]()
Go Brunei test for wat ?Originally posted by fudgester:I guess you must go for a blood test 3 months after every overseas training. I think the rationale is that if you got infected by the HIV virus, it would take about 3 months for the antibodies to show up.
I should know. As a medic, I've had to take blood samples from lots of people after my unit returned from overseas training (Brunei in the first year, followed by Thailand in the second year). I must have drawn blood from like 50++ people each time.
Pretty interesting experience. I had a guy who fainted at the sight of his own blood squirting into the vacuum tube, and siao-on Rambo wannabes who blanch and get frightened at the sight of the needle.![]()
SOP is standard across all overseas exercise, I guess...Without consideration of whether there is any chance for ahem...Might as well, better say than sorry..Originally posted by crazy monkey:Go Brunei test for wat ?![]()
STD/AIDs got window period one....so if u test prior to dat i think will be neg...to ensure an accurate test must wait for it to 'spread' in the body 1st.Originally posted by Evangelion84:Yah.

Correct... like I said in my previous post, it takes three months for the antibodies to show up in the case of HIV.....Originally posted by chunyong:STD/AIDs got window period one....so if u test prior to dat i think will be neg...to ensure an accurate test must wait for it to 'spread' in the body 1st.
Bruneis u want meh ? Thailand then more possible..Taiwan too...those Bing Lang Meis....Originally posted by fudgester:Correct... like I said in my previous post, it takes three months for the antibodies to show up in the case of HIV.....
And I know that there's little chance to *ahem ahem* in Brunei.... doesn't change the fact that the blood tests have to be carried out, though.

I don't think it has to do with testing for worms. For that I think you're going to have to do a faecal test, not a blood test. The presence of worms in faeces is the most direct way of knowing whether you've been infected by worms in your guts.Originally posted by tchiew:Hi Fudgster
Specifically for Brunei, is it to test for "tap worms, hook worms" etc? Can you confirm? After our Brunei trip, some of the guys from my company got them cos they didn't use water purifing tablets? Anyway, those guys ganna RP for no using the tablets. both asses burned
Thanks mate, very informative.Originally posted by fudgester:I don't think it has to do with testing for worms. For that I think you're going to have to do a faecal test, not a blood test. However, I guess perhaps they also test for worms by testing hormonal changes in the blood samples.... I dunno. I'm not a lab tech - you're going to have to ask them. I don't think that's the case, though.
And regarding those guys.... Well, it's quite amazing how they can actually drink water straight from the river without at least purifying the water first. As is it I was at first pretty apprehensive about drinking the river water even after purifying it, considering how animals drink out of it, pee in it, do big business in it.... you get the point.
While it takes a few minutes for the water to be purified (and it tastes disgusting afterward) it's much better than getting ill because of it.
hmm well. actually just about all the streams are very clear, and provided they're flowing (i.e. not still) i think its quite ok to drink straight from them without puritabbing - i did without any adverse effects whatsoever. the thought of animals peeing in it never crossed my mind at the time, for which i am thankful. ;-)Originally posted by fudgester:And regarding those guys....
