i think with this topic, most responses would be focused on how an officer should relate to his subordinates.
let's have some answers on how a "good" officer should relate to his peers, his superior, and the organisation (SAF) in general, and of course, his work (which may be more than leading men).

dun think that u deserved the authority of giving people extras, punishment... jus becos u spent 10 mths in OCS...
learn to think in your man's shoe.
ability to be flexible.
ability to 'defend' your man.
be firm but not damn strict or unreasonable... -
sad to say... the oni good one are the one that work his way up, ie to say from man to nco than offr.
our 1st CDF is one of them.
another good type of offr are those willing to learn, listen from those with experience even he is lower than his rank, a CPL or SGT.
During Vietnam war, many young US 2LT, just pass out, died during his 1st patrol beacuse he think he is greater than his SGT, he know more because he pass his offr couse.
well you the YSL can die for all i care but dun bring along the whole platoon. -

A bit of off topic,but got some links to the thread topic:should a commander let his men eat first before he does? Eg in our SAF cookhouse,should the Sgt/offr queue up right at the end of his platoon or should he go to the permstaff corner to grab his food? Last time during BMT,my SGT always queue up together with us,talk cock with us while queueing,then when the whole platoon had got their food,then is his turn to be served.He also ate together with his men...

i'm not a spec but i usually get my food from the spec counter coz it's less crowded and the aunties couldn't be bothered

For me an officer should not just lead his men.... he should also be able to inspire his men. Of course, easier said than done.
Anyway, bottom line is, I don't like officers who think they're big shots solely by virtue of their chocolate bars. Respect and trust has to be earned... it is not a privilege. -
sorry to say but i think those who used to say and like to say all the time to his man:" When i was in OCS... blah blah blah...." was not a good offr. he can stay in OCS forever for all i care. what he said he had done in OCS did not match what he was doing in unit. this is 1 kind of offr i will not follow at all.
again i feel that if he want to die, he may just go ahead but dun bring the whole platoon with him... it lucky that my man and i were jusy having ex and not in frontline with him. one is too many but guess what, i met 3 YSL who behave this way. good luck to them or i should say good luck to their man in the reserve. hope the day never come for him to "bring" them out.
some had mention LTC Harold G. Moore who later become Lt. General. to those who saw the show or read the book know that 1 platoon was lost or what some may like to say trap. well thanks to the LTA, the young "gan cheong spider" platoon leader. -

as for your example in/during BMT... some SGT do do that but what's the point? want to know the man more, that is just not the time. after meal, back in the office or in the bunk, better still if a smoker than in the smoker corner. -

anyway, i do agree that the cited example is one of misuse of authority. if the PC has nothing else urgent to attend to, he should (both morally, and as a show of leadership by example) clean his own weapon. and this applies to some other work too. delegation is inevitable in command positions. however, one has to consider carefully what to delegate, and the possible consequences of it.
