i've tried out a minimi before (para version) and yeah, iirc the saw's recoil was less. must qualify that i didn't have the chance to fire one after the other so direct comparison is a little hard and the last time i had live-fired a saw was some time back - blame the saf's infrequent live firings.Originally posted by one-niner:other than its subjective 30 rnd magazine used usually and the rusting. I think its one hell of a fine weapon due to its weight (as a SAW and low recoil for a SAW)
i never fired a FN Mini, so anyone out there who has fired the weapons, care to comment on the different recoil ?
one thing i realised abt the SAW is the rather simple and almost crude construction i would describe as.The weapon isn't well finished..the weldings..the stamped parts, and the infamous charging handle ..Originally posted by quivalen:i've tried out a minimi before (para version) and yeah, iirc the saw's recoil was less. must qualify that i didn't have the chance to fire one after the other so direct comparison is a little hard and the last time i had live-fired a saw was some time back - blame the saf's infrequent live firings.
the minimi does feel more 'solid' and looks a damn sight better than the saw though!
Good light MG except for finishing. all the problems you state, i dun have or my man dun face them often.Originally posted by Ponders:SAW Ultimax 100 is a very well-rated weapon.
For your info, it was almost adopted by US Army and Navy.
But when it was presented to them for evaluation, it was still under improvements (not sure if it was the Mk II to Mk III stage).
So US chose M249 (FN Minimi) instead to replace their M60.
Why SAW do not work well with blanks are due to serveral factors,
1. The 30-rds m16 mag was a "improvisation" and do not fit well into the rifle. the loose attachment makes feeding very poor.
2. Feeding is poor because blanks are wedged into the chamber and cut by the bolt, thus creating a "double feeding"-like IA.
3. Very often blank attachment is not screwed to maximum tightness, this lead to gas escaping and thus not creating enough blowback for the rifle's action cycle to complete.
4. Poor maintenance by operators, partly due to lack of exposure to the weapon by their superiors themselves, leading to many people unfamiliar with the weapon.
During live-firing, SAW fires reliably with most IA caused by magazine attachment issues.
think think think, is there a better way other than ask them to pull back a little.Originally posted by Ponders:Joshua1975 ==>
well, most of the IA encountered with SAW is like what i mentioned.
the blanks literally get cut by the bolt and wedged into the chamber... preventing subsequent rounds from chambering.
anyway... i tell my men to pull the magazine backwards slightly whenever firing with blanks so that the top of the mag is parallel with the rifle.
then incidents went down.
you had better serve you NS and be a SAW gunner or a commander b4 making such comment. dun think you had ever done an ex. fire fight at all...Originally posted by risenlava:haha..... some1 better do hv some gd ideas.... imagine having to change the mags while under heavy fire & ur squad nids tat heavy firepower for support....
1.) loosen the rubber band
2.) take out a new mag
3.) re-tie the new mag with the rubberband
4.) load the mag
5.) cork & get ready to fire
6.) realise ur whole squad is dead
(plz...tis whole think is a joke....)

The SAW was on trial with the Marines and NavSpecWar in 1986.That would place the model to be either the Mk 1 or the Mk 2.Originally posted by Ponders:SAW Ultimax 100 is a very well-rated weapon.

The gas system has a regulator to increase power when operating in adverse conditions (or to cut gas flow off to launch rifle grenades). The barrel has a bayonet (M7) lug and the Ultimax can also launch rifle grenades.fr http://www.dwsuk.co.uk/New_site/Other/umax.htm
