Why is there an Officer corp and a specialist corp?
Why is there not a single corp where everyone can be ranked equally?
No matter how well a spec do, he will not have the same regconition as an officer.
I'm a regular serviceman who has been in the force for 4 yrs and I'm currently on no pay leave to study in a local state uni. I've seen officers as my lecture mates. We're of the same age. However, our prospect are very different.
Their prospects seems good. Probably going to be captain within a year after returning to the service and probably might end up as a LTC when they retire grossing around 7k to 8k of pay. The bad thing is most of them will have to retire at 42 years old.
As for me, I'll probably be a SSG in a year after graduating grossing around 3k. If I can remain in the service, I might be a 2WO or 1WO with a pay of 4k to 5k. The plus point is WOs can stay in the service up to 55 years old.
I think it's the wrong choice I made when I was younger. I just hope SAF will regconise my qualification and skill and place me in a position where I can utilise my engineering education. -

Try to apply to convert to being an officer?
All armed forces have the officer and specialist corps..so live with it.. -
Yeah, you can try applying to OCS after your guaduation. Commission as LTA and promote to Captain after one year. Well better late than never. Else you got to live with it.

If everyone is an officer, then who is there to defend the country?
During a war, all the Major and above are all well hidden in the command post. They see the "big picture" but none of them will be carrying a rifle. I wonder if they know what is their rifle number!
During peacetime, officers are under tremendous pressure all the time to ensure their company or unit to be the best. That is not simple. Sometimes, the decision to charge or not to charge a soldier is not as simple as it seem. They are given that pay to endure that pressure and also the reason why they must retire early.
If you calculate properly, being a specialist or WO does not mean you earn lesser in the long run. That extra 13 years (from 42 to 55) makes a big difference.
Once they retire at 42, are you very sure they will end up with a second career? Only high flyer officers will be given a 2nd career. Most of them end up as a taxi driver.
When you retire at 42, your first kid may just have completed his primary school. Changing a career with a pay cut may not be something your family can live with. Please note that working in army is equal to zero work experience in many industry.
That chocloate bar or crab on the shoulder is a pride but do consider the negative factors before deciding to convert to an officer. -

27 - 32 Years ---> SSG $3200
32 - 38 Years ---> 2WO $3800
38 - 50 Years ---> 1WO $4200
50 - 55 Years ---> MWO $4000
To convert "Obitcher" (Officer)
27- 33 Cpt ----> $3800
33 - 38 Maj --------> $5000
38 - 42 LTC------------> $ 7000
42 -55 Taxi driver ----> $2500
Assuming inflation rate of 10% each year.

To me, I prefer fixed salary.
Taxi Driver salary is not constant. It varies, depending how hardworking and lukcy one is. -

So if a diploma holder was very capable and rised to the LTC rank..His pay will still be better than a spec -
