Death of a Full-Time National Serviceman

A Full-time National Serviceman, 3SG Ong Peng Ghee, 19, passed away this morning at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He was serving as a Section Instructor in the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC).
3SG Ong joined a few of his colleagues in an informal, self-paced jog around BMTC in Pulau Tekong when he collapsed at around 0845hrs. He was given immediate medical attention and was evacuated by helicopter to SGH at about 0927hrs. He passed away at 1026hrs.
MINDEF and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late 3SG Ong and will be assisting the family in their time of loss. MINDEF is conducting an investigation.

probably some kinda genetic thing the late 3SG had which he didn't know..
he could have just as easily passed on playing football years earlier or later... or maybe not...

Three deaths in a month.All unrelated..but it has given the SAF another blow in terms of morale.

with the other armed forces where people are not conscripted, they get a section of the people.. and are sieved and all that...
in singapore, we get EVERYONE..

I heard references and conjectures regarding karmic debt.Though it sounds too far out..but just look back to exactly two years ago.

It is premature to say that it isn't the SAF. What i want to know is it these accidents could have been prevented. Could these people could have been screened out at the enlisting stage?
We have all been through the medical checkup and i am sure we can agree that it isn't what we would call exhaustive. If perhaps it turns out that such conditions could have been uncovered through tests, then perhaps it is time to institute such tests.
Some may argue that most modern armies do not conduct exhaustive tests on potential recruits. The problem with that argument is that most of those armies are not conscript armies. The recruits are for the most part volunteers. This is not so with the SAF. The recruits are largely forced into service and as such, the state has a moral duty towards recruits to do everything in its power to prevent unnecc casualties.
I am not saying that we should screen for every conceivable illness and condition. I am saying that the SAF should look into improving the screening process. -

My IPPT test on 9th July MAJU CAMP. RSAF pls take note. Standby a SUPER PUMA at the parade square in case I fainted hor. (note: I 32 yrs old this yr ).
