Actually, the salute is not to the person holding the rank. The salute is an acknowledgement of the "commissioned" status of the rank, that by Constitution, the person is empowered by the state to execute his duties. You are actually saluting the Constitution, the state and the government. The salute is respect for the commissioned powers that the officer is given by the state. Don't think of him as an individual with his faults or blessings. -
I have not salute in my whole military life before.... albeit the ones we did during our parade with our rifles...
Frankly speaking... CDO has a raw deal some of my CDO course mate i have met .... I felt they are both better personally and professionally than the Officer I met in my unit.. but they are all condemned at Corporal level despite their professinalism .. -
Sorry? "Condemned" at corporal level? We've had guys deliberately deep-six their CO interviews so that they could stay with the platoon instead of being sent off to OCS.
The culture of the unit is such that rank's nowhere as big an issue as being with your guys. I don't know of anybody who was miserable about being an NCO instead of a commissioned officer. -

yup..my unit last time also like this..never salute to those vocation inferiors(green,black,blue..etc) to us...tat's how elite and proud we are..

When I first entered army,I any officer also salute,as time passed and I realised how fu-cked up some of these people could be,I stopped greeting all of them and managed to get away with it.Heh.

down here at my place, some senior officers are so hard up for salutes, if u don't salute them next day e-mail shoot down liao.
even got 1 time, a NSman officer complained that my colleague didn't salute him.
but there are still some senior officers here that are very nice and isn't particular about salutes, take those LTC(DR)s and COL(DR)s at HQMC, sometimes when u salute them they will salute back with a smile, or wave at u from inside their cars.

which reminds me. 1 day i was returning from lunch, walking around this corridor when i saw this COL(DR) walking toward me. i tried to siam but the only way i could do that was to turn 180 degrees around and walk away. that will look very awkward like as though i'm purposely avoiding him so i stood my ground and saluted him. the COL(DR) instead of saluting back he just wave me off, whatcha know.Originally posted by gnoik:Whenever I see officers, I will try to siam! -

i saluted whenever it was expedient when i wore green, because of what a lao cik said to me:" you salute not because you want to scratch the balls of the officer, but because you're proud of who you are as a soldier, your conduct and bearing is a reflection of you ! "

The unit cultre in Cdo is alittle different, men and officers work together for common objective. We are working in form of team. Therefore, very often, we dun salute, buit we pay due respect to their rank.
Must understand this point, your platoon mate started BMT together with you, but when their are back from OCS course, it is like old friends liao. Very different from infantry unit deployment. -
