ICTs reduced to 10 years from 2006

With the SAF’s transformation to the Third Generation SAF (3G SAF) as well as the surge in National Servicemen resource over the next 10 years, MINDEF had announced the reduction of Full-time National Service from 2½ years to 2 years on 15 June 2004. This was implemented in December 2004. MINDEF has since completed its review of the National Service Training System (NSTS) for Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNS).
In the revised NSTS, National Servicemen will normally serve only 10 years of In-Camp Training (ICT), instead of the current 13 year system consisting of 10 years of ICT followed by three years of Basic Individual Training (BIT). This will take effect from 1 April 2006.
The reduction in ORNS will not compromise the SAFÂ’s operational capability or readiness. The 3G SAF will make greater use of superior technology in the areas of comprehensive surveillance, battlefield awareness, precision strike and network-centric warfare. The improvements in the education profile of Singaporeans means that our National Servicemen can make better use of technology to enhance their fighting power. The intake of Full-time NSmen will surge over the next 10 years. These developments, taken together will enable the SAF to maintain the force level required in the 3G SAF without compromising operational readiness. In the revised NSTS, commanders will also have greater ownership in shaping their unitsÂ’ ICT training on the basis of the desired performance and training outcomes.

At the rate the population of Singapore is increasing, by 2050 when the population hits 8 million, Singaporean males will only need to do 3 months of NS with no reservist obligations.

How will it affect people who already went for their 1st or 2nd ICT?

More info on NS and Reservist training cycles -
a. Shape Phase (2-year NSF). Units would have trained to the required level of proficiency during their active 2–year NSF “Shape” phase. The 10-year ORNS phase primarily structures currency training to maintain the operational readiness of the units.
b. Strengthen Phase (1st to 4th ICT). This phase remains unchanged from the current system. As the NS unit would have just transited from its active phase, training will focus on strengthening the component level competencies to maintain the unitÂ’s operational readiness.
c. Sharpen Phase (5th to 7th ICT). NS units will intensify their training to prepare for the external evaluation in the 7th ICT. The result of the external evaluation, together with the unitÂ’s demonstrated performance over the last 7 years, will be used by the NS commander and Higher HQ to customise the training requirements in the subsequent two ICTs.
d. Sustain Phase (8th to 10th ICT). The training outcomes in the 8th and 9th ICT depend on the demonstrated performance of the unitÂ’s previous ICTs. -

so will existing reservists, like those attended 3-5 yrs ICTs, be affected, i.e. all can reduce to 10 ICTs? or this reduction only available to new enlistees?

I had completed my 10th ICT last year ( 28.6.2004 ). Base on what facts sheet from MIW, I'll receive a MR status starting sept 05 onwards.
No more in camp liao.......but still got IPPT right? -

So as long as 10 years after ORD, will be ROD?
or if haven't finish the min. no. of high and low key within that 10 years, the ROD will be extended? -
well i think it is 10 cycle ,not 10 years.
So 7 high key,3 low key set as minimum b4 u ROD. -
Looking at the training - the only difference to me is the removely of the 3 BITs, which was a total waste of time in the first place. The last 3 years for me was more like a one gathering of old friends - watching boring videos and attending equally boring briefings. All my buddies agreed that we would rather do the 3 years BIT in one single in-camp, and get it over with. Looks like people at the top have noted the feedback.
For units that have done well in ATEC (ie. best unit), the remainder of the ICTs (8,9, and 10th year) should be switched off and pretty relax. -
