Last time I know of this this 2LT who has IPPT Gold but is very quiet and cannot speak well.He also seem to get nervous easily.
My company's 2IC was one such person.Originally posted by Marco_Simone:Have you ever met such people before?

being quiet does not mean one cannot be a good leader. it's true that communication is one of the key qualities of a leader. but the means of communication is never dictated. he may choose to do so in writing, or convey his ideas through a spokesmen or mouthpiece.Originally posted by Marco_Simone:Have you ever met such people before?

I disagree. Effective leaders need to speak well. Imagine a commander who can't direct his men during war. He can't be scribbling instructions and passing out pieces of paper.Originally posted by wuming78:being quiet does not mean one cannot be a good leader. it's true that communication is one of the key qualities of a leader. but the means of communication is never dictated. he may choose to do so in writing, or convey his ideas through a spokesmen or mouthpiece.
of course, if we are differentiating between leaders and exceptional leaders, the ability to convey one's ideas well is important. but here, we are just talking about leaders.Originally posted by Zooish:I disagree. Imagine if our PM can't speak well, how to give N Day Rally?
A leader who can't articulate well is just that, a mere leader. A good leader is someone who can communicate well on top of other qualities.
Just need to shout a bit louder during BMT can liao.Originally posted by shade343:Who says you need to have leadership qualities in order to be an officer?![]()
Ok, i have a different definition from u.Originally posted by wuming78:of course, if we are differentiating between leaders and exceptional leaders, the ability to convey one's ideas well is important. but here, we are just talking about leaders.
the crux here is communciation. but there are many means of communication, other than speaking. so are we saying someone who is unable to speak well cannot be a good leader, even though he can communicate well using other means?
and what is meant by speaking well?
in the end, the thread starter pointed out that the 2LT was quiet and unable to speak out in public. yes i agree that probably hinders his effectiveness. but if he is able to convey his ideas that are clear and well thought out through other means, why not?
in the end, it boils down to how we each define a good leader, right?
Unfortunately a lot of those officers are like tat, nsf or regularsOriginally posted by Zooish:Ok, i have a different definition from u.
To me, if a leader can't speak wth ease in front of a crowd, he can't be effective. Esp for a military leader, he needs to command and address a large number of ppl. If he squeaks like a mouse, or stutters and stammers, then he can't convince me that he's capable. A confident speaker can hold the audience's attention better. It could be just bravado, but isn't the SAF a big wayang show anyway?
Of course, there's a distinction between being reserved and being a poor communicator. Some ppl juz don't like to talk much, but can deliver a rousing speech when needed, that's fine. Then there are those who talk a lot but have no substance.
